Sources: #Orioles, All-Star 2B Jonathan Schoop have begun extension talks. Schoop is coming off a career offensive season and is eligible for free agency after ’19. Any deal likely would need to be north of Jean Segura’s 5-year, $70M contract. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Best news I’ve heard in a long time.   Segura’s 5/$70 mm covers one pre-FA year.   Schoop has two left, so his deal would look a bit different.     6/$80 mm?

Done, in a heartbeat.

Morosi a little later on Twitter...”On Jonathan Schoop: Separate source denies anything of substance has been discussed between the parties regarding an extension. If any contact has occurred, it remains preliminary.”

and then this..”.#Orioles face numerous challenges in trying to sign Schoop: His price tag has increased substantially over the past year, and ownership may be reluctant to approve a large contract with Jones, Machado entering final year of their deals and possible rebuild looming. @MLB”

So in other words “everything in my first tweet was completely wrong.”    Talk about a buzzkill.

I mean, it's great that we are thinking extension with him, but can we just once buy on a guy when he is not coming off a career year?lk

I’d still rather have the conversation now, as opposed to a year from now.

He puts up a 2.5 win season and he's probably cheaper next year.

He puts up another 5.6 win season and he joins Manny in NY.

There’s the dilemma.     But overall, prices go up the closer the player gets to free agency, because the risk to the player of getting injury before reaching FA gets smaller as the time shortens.

Sure.  But Schoop does have more risk than someone like Manny.
