For the minor league portion of Rule V, what are the rules? Must be on AAA roster the whole season?

Good question, way beyond my knowledge.

Where is PhillyOs fan. :)

A player selected in the AAA Phase of the Rule 5 Draft must be assigned to the Reserve List of the AAA club that drafted the player and he must be given a 15-day trial during Spring Training with that club, but the player can be assigned to the Active List of any minor league affiliate in the MLB club's organization once the minor league regular season commences. Also, unlike players selected in the Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft, a player selected in the AAA Phase does not have to be offered back to the club from which he was drafted if the player is ultimately assigned to the Active List of a minor league affiliate below AAA.

Looks like the Yanks were trying him out as a starter late in the season after spending much of the year as a reliever. 4 of his last 5 appearances in Trenton were as a starter, and the one he didn't start he threw 4 innings. In those 5 appearances, he tossed 29 IP, 32 Ks with a WHIP under 1.

Good article from Encina with lots of quotes on all of the Rule 5 happenings. My infant reactions are that Cortes is going to be a spot starter, long relief option. The other two guys are good arms with high upside for back end bullpen spots.

We still have three open slots on the 40 man so there is a good chance we see all these guys in ST.

I have team at 38 filled spots, not 37.

24 pitchers and 14 players.

It would be nice if all these Rule 5 picks were prerequisite moves to the O's clearing roster spots via trades of Britton, Brach, Givens, and/or ODay.   This way they could keep a few of them on the roster.

I think Mesa is a starter, I need to watch more video, but until my report, there is this lovely little start line (keep in mind, only 8 games).

These are his splits as a starter, most of these innings came in AA.

TL:DR - He allowed 1 run in 35 innings in games he started.

Why take a rule 5 guy and not bring him to ST?  Does that happen?  We took 3. I think that tells you what the state of our pitching is and that we might trade some relievers.

Indeed it does.  But I'm pleased with the way the O's handled Rule 5.  They potentially improved their roster depth at a low cost.  Granted, they probably rely on Rule 5 too much.
