Amazing how this deal happened without any advance speculation about it.    The Rays just spung it.   I think the return is pretty mediocre, but we’ll see.

Almost like it didn't take weeks to develop.

It’s interesting to note that in his career, Longoria has played almost exactly one full season of games vs. the O’s — 161 games, 160 starts.    In those games he’s hit .269/.334/.528, with 40 homers and 108 RBI.     I always thought he was a very classy opponent, and I’ll miss seeing him play, though I won’t miss his success against us.

Rays got 2 good prospects and 1 Ok SP for it. Along with OF depth and bats.

Who is the okay SP?  Who is the second good prospect?  They are going to pay a guy who had a -1.1 rWAR in 2017 $15M.

yeah... he was always one of those guys you liked competing against. Brought it to the park every day. There are a lot of other things the Rays can be criticized for, but this may be the icing on the cake. I think if some serious owner wanted to relieve them of a franchise, it wouldn't take much convincing.

What has happened:

Longoria leaves rays

Stanton leaves Marlins

Hosmer leaves Royals

What could happen in next 6 months:

McCutchen leaves pirates

Manny leaves Orioles

Donaldson leaves Blue Jays

Baseball has a problem.  All of these players are the faces of their franchise on medium to small market teams and all of them will leave because those teams can't afford them.  Some of them may be good moves and some are horrible moves but it's not a great picture to paint.

...and the Longoria trade was made so the Rays could avoid a Stanton like situation. In early April Longoria would have gained no trade power.

True that.  Hadn't really thought about the Kris Bryant move in this context, but it isn't just the 7th year of control.  There on Cots his service time rests at 9.170, and off he goes.

I actually think this helps Machado's market.  Giants were a poor fit for us, and Longoria/Frazier are the Plan B types for clubs with Machado/Donaldson Plan A's.

MLBTR had the rumor two days ago.
