Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects for 2018

I figured Hays would be pretty high, based on comments one or two of their writers had made to Melewski last fall.    21’s pretty darned high.   That’s where Nick Markakis was ranked before his rookie season.    Adam Jones was no. 28.     Let’s hope Hays lives up to it.

So BA doesn’t give any narrative on its top 100 any more?

Apparently there is much more top 100 content coming throughout the day, but I'm not sure what it is.

Per Steve Melewski, Keith Law came out with his “2nd 50” list today, and had Sisco at 53 and Hays at 79.     Law’s list is behind a paywall at ESPN.com.    I’m surprised Hays is that low, but whatever.

Law wrote earlier in the year that Hays had 45 speed and wasn't high on him as a defender if I remember correctly, and if you think Hays isn't a good fielder and isn't going to walk much, that ranking fits. I don't necessarily agree with those things, but that's probably where Law is on the subject.

Those rankings are quite good when one considers that Law didn’t think highly enough of any prospects to rank them in the 1-50 slots ;)

Law doesn't know his ass from his elbow.

He also doesn't much understand baseball as well as he thinks he does.

Meh.   He's not paid to be uncontroversial.    He goes out on a limb and states extreme positions because that's what they want him to do.    He's knowledgeable enough.

Hays(21), Sisco(68), and Mountcastle(71) made the list.

Matches up pretty well with where I'd have them.  Although I'd probably have Hays a little bit lower (30-40).

Fangraphs way lower on the Orioles prospects.

Only Hays (90) made the FG list.

Yeah, I saw that, doesn’t change my opinion. I haven’t seen enough of all the prospects to be super confident where they should all stack up but I do have players I’ve seen that I use as indicators.

For example, I like Mountcastle over Chavis but less than Willie Calhoun. Sisco is similar, I have Sisco and Mountcastle really clos.

Hays I like more than Jake Bauers but less than Mejia.

To clarify, my intention was not to suggest that it should sway your opinion.  Just thought it was an interesting difference.

No worries, I didn't take it that way, I just wanted to clarify the statement of mine you quoted.

I wanted to be upfront that I don't know enough about all the game's prospects to make a legit top 100 list.  I'm familiar with most and have watched video on all the real top guys, but as far as my opinion on the placement of Orioles guys within a top 100, I use the rankings of other (non-Orioles) players I've seen and have a good feel for in order to slot the Orioles players where I think they belong.
