This free agency period has been beyond boring.  Next year, not so much.  Where do the following guys end up?

  1. Bryce Harper
  2. Manny Machado
  3. Clayton Kershaw
  4. Josh Donaldson
  5. Charlie Blackmon

I think Kershaw stays with the Dodgers, either because he doesn’t opt out, or because the Dodgers extend him by a couple of years.  Remember, he’s missed time in 3 of the past 4 years, so teams have to be a bit wary of how durable he’ll be at age 32+.

The Kershaw case will be fun to watch.  I'd be completely surprised if he chooses not to opt out.  He's owed $70M for '19 and '20.  He'll easily get another $100M+ contract even with the time he's missed...unless he has some terrible injury in 2018.  Now, I do think the Dodgers will come to an agreement with him, but that's after he opts out of his current contract.

One minor clarification, 2019 will be his age 31 season.

Right, I was referring to after 2020, when his current contract expires if he doesn’t opt out.

To be clear, I agree he’ll opt out if he has a reasonably healthy season.     But let’s say he starts 10 games and is shelved with a bad back the rest of the season.    That could be another story.

Any way it slices, I think the Dodgers will find a way to keep him.
