Buck's comment today on Chris Tillman

While I was listening to 105.7 Buck was asked about what he thought about Chris Tillman's prospect for making a comeback to previous form this year.  I am paraphrasing but he said something like I don't want to say too much because I don't want anyone else to sign him.  I came away thinking it is more than likely Tillman will be back with the Orioles this year.  That doesn't bother me because since Buck has seen him pitch at this past mini-camp I trust he came away with some kind of positive feeling from his progress.  Chris was a pretty good pitcher for a long time who I was clamoring to be extended a couple of years ago.  He was really bad last year and the Orioles need more help but it appears he likes it here and I don't think you have much to lose by bringing him back.  I also got a feeling from listening to Buck that Austin Wynn's has a pretty decent shot at being the backup cather at least in the beginning of the season to get Chance Sisco more minor league defensive experience.

Fine then

If the Orioles want him back, why don't they freaking sign him already!

Or 2013, 2014 and 2016 until he got hurt

With this market he might have to take a one year deal with us. Usually guys that want to rebuild their value go to pitcher friendly environments. I wouldn’t mind Tillman and Dickey for the rotation.

I don't see the harm in it. If he bounces back then he he is a very solid pitcher. If not then he probably won't be worse than any other no name guy we run out there.

I don't think Buck saw Tillman throw at the minicamp.   Buck said he talked to Tillman.

I heard the interview with Buck on 105.7 and I agree Buck seem comfortable with Wynns as a backup if Sisco is not ready defensively.

But is Dan?

Tillman will agree to a one year contract but there are terms that may be competitive with other teams.  Minor or Major league contract?   How much is the base salary?  What kind of incentives are offered?  Is there an option involved.

The worst thing the O's could do in sign Chris to a base salary that is so high they can't cut him and then have him pitch just as poorly as last year.

I am in favor of signing Chris to the right kind of contract.

I don't that is an issue.  If Buck and Russell does think Sisco is ready for the majors defensively then I think Dan will be fine with keeping Wynns as the back up catcher.

Chris is probably still holding out hope for a MLB deal.

    • By some defensive metrics, Ryan Mountcastle and 2024 Gold Glove winner Carlos Santana are similar:  https://www.fieldingbible.com/drs-leaderboard/players?position=3 FWIW Luis Castillo's value at Baseball Trade Values has jumped from a negative $30.6 million on November 8, to a negative $6.1 million on November 22, to a positive $5.5 million on December 2 to a positive $2.8 million Monday to a positive $7.7 million Friday evening. The Mariners will continue to monitor Castillo's trade value as the pitching market evolves this offseason. Trade offers should determine Castillo's trade value although his no-trade clause complicates matters.
    • Context matters.  Really I should have made a much longer post incorporating the following image.   The O's are roughly 20th in revenue.  (TBH, I have some questions about that.  I think it might be lower) They're currently 19th in payroll.  Is it really fair to say they're underspending?  (Mind you this chart is a few years older.) There are a lot of people claiming they can spend 200 a year on salary.  Maybe.  But it's fair to say team's with similar payrolls don't do that.
    • This is true, but the problem remains if you sign some guy to a 7 year contract, while that money might be palatable in 2026, it could quickly grow not so in the upcoming years.  Obviously, if you could sign Burnes for 1/2 years you'd do it; but that isn't really an option.
    • What happened in the 2nd half w Adley is puzzling. I would say however that 17 mill in 2027 should be more like 10% of the payroll, so far more palatable than 20%.
    • You have to look at payroll in context though thinking 3 years in advance compared to what league average will be with revenue increasing.  This is league average payroll.   2019 112 million 2020 58 million but was Covid year. 2021 120 million 2022 134 million 2023  150 million 2024 156 million So league average is up 36 million 4 years.  If it keeps around that pace league average should be over 180 million so that 100 million would be little over half of league average payroll.
    • This is drastically underestimating Paredes
    • they did not. 2 big moves so far, bring in Fried and Williams, but lose Holmes anf Cortez, Not to mention Soto. Oblivious there not yet but as it stands now they are not as good. and god forbid Stanton regresses or Judge gets hurt.
