Is there a worse team with one minute left of a game?

How many times have we seen the Terps be within one point with the ball with less than a minute only to play ridiculously bad basketball over that last minute?

I had to laugh with 19 seconds left Turgeon took a timeout to "draw up a play".  Please.

This team has some talent and some heart, but it's so poorly coached that they will never be able to do anything.

Turgeon is going nowhere because Maryland is not going to buy out his contract so we'll get more embarrassing basketball from what should be a perennial top 25 program. Losing to Ohio State? Penn State, Nebraska? These are football schools.

MD football has no chance in the Big 10 and thanks to Turgeon, they are an embarrassment in basketball now as well.

Seven years into the Turgeon disastrous reign and we're in the NIT. What a joke.

And people were glad when Trimble left.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Dude single handedly won about a half dozen games a year IN SPITE OF his boneheaded coach who can't actually coach to save his life. Any frustration with Trimble was misdirected and should've been aimed squarely at Turgeon's idiotic offense. Cowan simply isn't as clutch/smart as Trimble and can't compensate for basically not having a coach. Also love the multiple drives a game Cowan blows by defenders and misses layups and/or gets rejected.

Effing hilarious that you have two 7 footers with enough skill to play in the pros and you can't figure out that you should be force feeding the ball inside and destroying teams inside. Turgeon's lack of development with the bigs is beyond pathetic and borderline comical. Gary turned DAVE FRICKING NEAL into a useful big.

Not only would this be a tourney team under Gary but they have enough here to make a run imo. Don't even think we'll make the NIT this year.

And spare me the "injuries" bullcrap. Every team is down players. Because losing IVAN EFFING BENDER is such a massive massive loss. How about having a deeper team in the first place?

All our teams are basically being held hostage and have zero chance to actually win any time soon.

You won't get any arguments from me. Melo was a bit selfish at times, but it was probably more to do with the fact that Turgeon was clueless about calling any kind of realistic play in the last minute. Turgeon once made a comment that with four minutes left in a close game that he told Melo to, "Just take over," told me everything I needed to know about his coaching and development skills.

This program will go nowhere with him at the helm.

Do you think Plank gets involved in this situation? Should he? I agree MD basketball should be kicking ass and taking numbers in the Big Ten.

Not sure what is going on with Plank honestly. He got himself all caught up in politics and Under Armor has been on the decline since and we haven't heard much from him of since.

He allowed the football team to implode with Edsell and he apparently doesn't care about the basketball program either. I just think the Maryland elites just don't care as much about their sports as they used to. They seems to be ok with being mediocre.

I'm distressed to read your thoughts. I hope somebody of note and importance will $tep up and do something about this situation. We should be a top 10 team every year. No excuses.

I'd be happy with top 20 perennially with occasional forays into the top 10.

I think that should be the realistic goal of the program.

Objectively, why should Maryland be a top 10 team every year?

First of all, literally nobody is doing that.    The most top 10 finishes over 2008-17 are:  Kansas 8; UNC, Louisville and Kentucky 6; Michigan State and Florida 5; Villanova, Duke, Arizona and Syracuse 4.

Second of all, why should Maryland be on a par with these 10 schools?    Mind you, I’m not saying they couldn’t be; many of those schools are driven by having a truly outstanding coach rather than some obvious advantage in resources.   But it’s just not that easy to find that great coach, and lots of schools are trying, many of which have more resources and more tradition of basketball success than Maryland.

Here’s what I’d say: 40 different schools have made the top ten at least once in the last 10 years.    26 have done it at least twice.    Maryland really should be one of those schools.

There's no reason Maryland COULDN'T be a true blue blood program - they have all of the necessary resources and advantages to do so - but it likely isn't fair to EXPECT such production.  I never like judging off of NCAA tournament results (final four appearances or elite eight appearances, for example) because of the finicky nature of the tournament where luck plays such a huge role.  But in general, these are what I think should be reasonable expectations for the MD basketball program:

  • A program that consistently earns a seed somewhere around the 4-6 line of the NCAAs.  This would put them around the 16-24 range, which is where they should consistently be able to be.
  • Every 5 years or so, they should have a team that has the capability of being a legitimate national championship contender.  Or in other words, a top 10-15 team.
  • Every 5 years or so, it's probably also reasonable that they would have a team that is rebuilding, or lost too much talent due to attrition, and they are a bubble team or miss the NCAAs altogether.

We had a lot of that good stuff with Gary Williams. If not ten we should be top 20 every year in my opinion. There is no excuse not to be with the area talent.

I don’t think it’s that easy.    There are a lot of state schools drawing from a bigger state population than Maryland, and then there are schools that just have huge basketball reputations.    Recruiting is pretty much national now, and the true five star players don’t stay close to home all that often.

I think Maryland has underperformed since its national championship year, but they really don’t have a natural advantage that should lead fans to expect a top 20 team every year.

Nothing is ever easy but this program should be top 20 if not every,  but most years.

Why “should” they?     They’ve been in the top 20 twenty times in the last 50 years.    That’s actually a pretty good record if you ask me.

70’s - 5 times

80’s - 3 times

90’s - 3 times

00’s - 6 times

10’s - 3 times

Lefty had a nice run of five in a row (‘72-74) and Gary had a run of 7 in a row (‘98-04), but it’s just not that easy to do on a constant basis.    Turgeon is not up to their standards, but even those guys had their dry spells.

Because they are right in the middle of the Baltimore/DC/VA recruiting area.

Because they should have enough funds to have great facilities and quality coaches.

Because they are not in a particularly strong BB conference.

We are very chauvinistic about the basketball talent in the area, and there’s no doubt it’s very good.    But as I said, recruiting is pretty national these days, and certainly all the big basketball schools have pipelines into DC.   And good basketball players come from all over the place these days.

As to the Big “10” not being a good basketball conference, (1) I’m not sure I’d agree if you’re looking at the longer term as opposed to some small window, and (2) in any event,  I think playing in a weaker conference can hurt recruiting and therefore the team’s chances of being a top 20 team.

Overall, the way I feel about it, there are probably 50 schools that can compete for a top 20 spot year in and year out, and fewer than 20 of those will make it because of the 1-3 schools who aren’t perennial contenders but who have a good team for a year or two.   So, getting in the top 20 40% of the time is a very solid hit rate.

Would you be happy if Duke hit that 40 percent?

    • Elite players is what win titles, for the most part. Get as many elite guys as you can. Stars and scrubs is and always will be the best way to build a roster (although that name is misleading because scrubs really just means cheap player and cheap player doesn’t mean scrub..but it gets the point across).
    • So you believe Cowser has well below average power because that’s what 10-15 is?
    • I'd rather pass on Cease and keep Norby, Ortiz, Kjerstad and Cowser in the system.   I know you have to give up value to get value.  But the cost to acquire good starting pitching in terms of money and prospects has inflated so astronomically that I start to wonder if we might just be better off auditioning Povich, McDermott, Seth Johnson, Cole Irvin and seeing if anyone can stick...?     I'd probably be willing to part with Beavers, Wagner, Fabian, Stowers and I can see maybe trading one top guy (but not Mayo, Holliday or Basallo).
    • Let’s use the Orioles 2023 season as a general case study and compare with a study I learned about via well known journalist and author, Malcolm Gladwell, Revisionist History podcast. (Season 1,  Episode 6, “My Little Hundred Million”. )   https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/revisionist-history/id1119389968?i=1000372836942   At minute 12:15 or so, Gladwell discusses whether it is a greater help to a sports team if the worst player on the roster is replaced with a better player or if the team brings in an even better player as its top star.  That is, does it help more to strengthen your strongest link or your weakest link? His conclusion is: It depends on the sport. In basketball one player can dominate the court in offense and defense. So improve your top player. In soccer, a tital team sport improve the weakest player.   It set me thinking is baseball a strong link or weak link sport?   It seems that in constructing the 2023 roster, Elias, whether intentionally or not, used the improve the weakest links strategy.    Gibson replaced Lyles McCann replaced Benboom Frazier replaced Odor.  Additional improvements occurred with adjusting playing time levels of players in the organization for both 22 and 23.  The result was a stellar 101 win season!   The Orioles 2023 regular season experience suggests that baseball is a strengthen the weakest links sport.    But then the playoffs. The consensus seems to be we lacked the superstar who can carry the team.    It seems that baseball in the playoffs is more of a strong link sport.    So, to put it together, the 2023 Orioles season experience suggests that the regular season is improved with an improve the weak link strategy. While playoffs often need a superstar.    So, if this theory holds true, do the Orioles need to specifically add more proven All Star level players or do we simply depend upon the hope that one of these years we will have a good player get hot at just the right time?
    • Anyone considered for extention has insurance for that case.  Nothing like an extention for sure but I know the family of a top 5 pick who carried a $10m insurance policy in college prior to being drafted.  Any agent at that level should have his clients insured.
    • Looking at which numbers?
    • That's the whole point.  Other teams aren't going to give up more in players/prospects than the Yankees gave up AND pay Soto $33 million.
