2018:  5.29 ERA, 5.32 FIP, 1.582 WHIP, 1.52 K/BB

2019: 5.28 ERA, 6.33 FIP, 1.761 WHIP, 0.88 K/BB

What are you seeing that makes you think he's much better this season?

Jeez Corn, any newbie can look at that and see what's better.  In 2018 we were going for it and it was the playoffs.  In 2019, we are going for it and it is the #1 draft pick.

Cashner is much better this season than last season.  Maybe its Brocail's influence.

Tbf, after his terrible first start, he's doing better. 13.50 ERA after the opener, 3.31 in the games since. Don't have FIP for that span, but WHIP is like 2.5 game 1 and 1.4325 since.

He had stretches last year when he pitched decently.

No doubt. And there's no reason to think he won't have another stinker to potentially re-skew the numbers (they won't just continue to get better as he gets further from game one). Just pointing out how someone could say he looks better this year. He very much helped us win or put us in position to win the three games since that first dud.

Yeah, he’s goofy looking. Liked his stuff tonight, though.

He has pretty decent stuff. I think he does well for this team and honestly might have been OK as a #5 last year. But everyone else pretty much sucked too. If he stays healthy he can eat some innings, which has value at this stage of our development.

We certainly didn't pay him as a #5!

I guess that's fair. Based on his production last year and how the market has been, he probably deserved a 1 year deal at 3-5 mil. But I don't know, it was a short term deal so didn't hamper that much and hopefully he can eat innings this year.
