Payroll.....

Can someone explain why we are deferring money on the Cashner signings? The payroll is 30 million or so less than last years (im sure someone will have the exact figure). If we are saving money for Manny that would be one thing, but I doubt it's the case. Why defer money that you will need later when the payroll is short not....Even if they add another starter and Jay the payroll still won't likely get close to last season. Plus I'm sure the deferred money comes with interest payments.

I'm in the camp that if a player is willing to defer money you defer money.  Money now is always worth more than money then.  It doesn't look like the deferment increased the total.

Will it might hold up another deal in a few years. And unless they are adding another 25-30 million this year who cares? Why not just spend it and clear it off the books

Because you are getting 3M in value for say 2.5M.  If you can do it why woudln't you?

Britton, Jones, Schoop, Brach, Macahdo, Trumbo,  and O'Day will be off the payroll in two years and time value of money.  I am guessing with the congress increasing spending and cutting revenue the US dollar will be worth a lot less in 2 years.  Why not defer it if the player doesn't mind?

Right.  I am not economist, but it basically comes down to the cost of money.  Like you said money now vs money later.   Don’t think it has anything at all to do with future contracts.

But I still do not think there’s any chance they sign Manny.    Seeing him as a Yankee it’s going to sting more than seeing Mussina as a Yankee.

The Orioles may have a much lower Hard cap to their budget than they did with the MLBam payment.  I did not want to bring this up again. But I think they are slimming if not rebuilding.

Answer this question:  Where is Jake Arrieta going to sign?  The correct answer is "We do not know"  And neither do the O's.   But if his price drops in March the O's want to be in a position to negotiate with him.  And add Tillman,  And add a left-handed hitting left field and a utility players.

All the more reason to rebuild.

No way Jake will return to the Orioles ....take it to the bank! Hoping for Cobb or Lynn are long shots even now....Arrieta is a no shot.

I have no idea what the plan is for this seasons payroll.  At this moment they seem to have "one foot in the door and one foot out" competitively speaking.  Could be that Cashner is the big signing for this season.  Perhaps the braintrust believes that we have Mil prospects that will contribute this season.  Really hard to guage any plan at this moment.  Just have to wait and see how this all plays out.

Yup time value of money is incredibly beneficial when you are playing with millions.

Right, but it usually doesn’t in Baseball contracts.
