Keep As Many Players As Possible

When trying to figure out the roster, remember that this administration loves to do whatever to keep our players that they bring into camp. If someone has no options, look for them to be given first chance to make the roster over those that do. Those on minor league deals will probably try to be stashed in the minors unless needed.

Looks like it's Cortes and either Joely or Edgin for the bullpen. We lost Mesa. I don't think we will lose anyone else at least until Trumbo comes back. That could force a decision on Valencia.

In order to get Rasmus and Valencia on the 40 man roster two players must be DFA'd    If the O's want to keep Joely Rodriguez or Edgin they need to DFA three.   

Kelly, Vielma and Crichton look vulnerable.  The O's would hope all three pass through waivers.

The O's may keep Hays instead of Gentry because Hays is already on the 40 man roster and Gentry is on a minor league contract..

It will be interesting to see who the 13th  position player will be.  I doubt its Alvarez because he is not on the 40 man roster.  They might decide to keep a 13th pitcher instead.  At least for a while.

Dan's hunt on the waiver wire could directly effect whether Wright and/or  Cortes make the team or are DFA'd.

Signing Flaherty to a minor league contract would be logical move.  Then move in the majors sometime into the season.   Beckham's groin injury is something to watch here.

I doubt that Rickard or Susac are DFA'd.   JMO

It seems like it's been awhile since we've had four catchers on the 40.  And with Hays, Mullins, Santander, and Stewart, what is Rickard's future here?

Nothing wrong with 4 catchers on the 40 man if they deserve to be there.   Mullins and Stewart are not ready for the majors at this point.   Joey could light up AAA as a leadoff batter and could be back to the O's at some point this season.

Who do you think would claim Rickard if he was released?  He's currently their seventh OFer if you don't want to count Mullins or Stewart.  There are unemployed guys like Chris Dickerson who have as much upside as Rickard.  He's not a guy you protect if you are building your best 25, IMO.

Right. I don't see a whole lot of value in Richard. There are always OF'ers on the wire or FA that can not hit or play average defense.

Reading Showalter say that Sisco will DH some in addition to being backup catcher tells me that he will fill Alvarez's function.  I think until Trumbo comes back, that DH will be a Mancini/Valencia/Sisco rotation.

Beckham's injury would be a gateway to signing Flaherty.  Valencia would be starting 3B in that case I assume.

I would not be surprised if the Orioles start with 13 pitchers.  Gentry however still provides CF and baserunning skills that you won't find elsewhere on the 25-man.  I'm guessing that he makes it, and that would require the additional DFA.

Trumbo replacing Santander on the 25-man makes sense (once Santander's service time qualifies and Trumbo "gets healthy").  Unless of course Santander is tearing it up.  The skeptic in me is envisioning the board's reaction when Santander is sent down after OPSing .900.

If Santander is OPSing 900 he doesn't get sent down.  They find someone else to clear roster space.

They better not DFA Rickard. He’s been a nice piece for us, def a keeper for now. People love to hate on him, he is what he is, not everyone has to be a superstar.
