2009... Adding Two Monster FA's

Perhaps this should be known simply as "The ARod Fallacy."

The Rangers' experience would suggest "if you sign him, they will come" is pure folly.

Three years of stagnant or declining attendance and unrealized marketing synergies later, Hicks and co. were willing to shell out ~$71M to have ARod play elsewhere.

A-Rod didn't have any ties to Texas. Teixeira is a hometown guy and will be the next face of the franchise just like Ripken, another Maryland product. This is what Angelos and the Orioles are banking on...

Tex has said himself that his family is asked when he is "coming home" all the time by all sorts of people.

Did Cal really help that much with attendance before the streak became a big deal? Tex ain't no Cal either.

While some would argue that this is irrelevant because Miss Pay-Rod was not a local boy coming home, I would argue it's irrelevant because Tom Hicks is an idiot. (If you can be fleeced by Shrub, you're pretty much scraping the bottom of the IQ barrel.)

The notion that a borderline star like Teixeira "coming home" would boost attendance more than signing the single best and most popular player in baseball is highly dubious.

Hicks and the Rangers grossly miscalculated the impact one player can have on a franchise. Some here feel Teixeira would somehow be different, but that seems kinda foolish and naive to me.

Putting a winning team that's fun to watch on the field, while providing a top notch ballpark experience... that's what will boost attendance.

As I said, the Orioles saw a 300,000 ticket increase after Miggy and Javy were signed.

No reason to think the same won't happen if/when we sign Tex.

To keep the sales up, you have to win though.
