Taking a HS SS in the 2nd rd last year probably had something to do with the choice also.

I find it quite troubling to hear from Grenier he didn't even speak to anyone from the Orioles prior to the draft other than a brief conversation with an area scout.  Did they bother to talk to Xavier Edwards? The player (HS SS) taken immediately after Grenier and being compared to Ozzie Smith and Jimmy Rollins. I didn't hear any of those comparisons being made with Gernier. I wonder how many other teams would have chosen Grenier over Edwards? I'm guessing not many, if any.

I think this was a pure signability pick.    The O's feel they can save a lot of money on this slot, to potentially go after some "tough sign" high schoolers the next few rounds.     No question Greiner has the glove to play in the Majors.  My guess is he won't ever hit enough to play there.    The real value of this pick will be determined if we can save money on signing him and sign a talented high schooler in the next few picks....

But wouldn't you want to at least talk to the kid about contract demands before picking him?

I would imagine they talked with his agent to see his number. And I am sure they did their due diligence on him in their scout meeting with him and doing his homework. I got from his comments that they just did not tell him they were looking to take him there, whereas some other teams may have said they would take him at pick X, etc...

In any event, I am sure they know what they needed to know to take him there. This isn’t the Syd Thrift years brother Corn. The ML team is in disarray, but the amateur scouting folks and player development peeps seem to be clicking well. If only we had an international interest....

I'd watched some Oregon State games before the draft, but never really noticed Grenier with all the other high end talent on the team.  So I watched the OSU game yesterday specifically to watch Grenier, and Luke was right that his swing is a concern.  Just about everyone in the OSU lineup was making good contact on the starting pitcher except for Grenier.  Small sample size, but he looked overmatched against high 80s fastballs and mediocre breaking balls.

Grenier reminds me of the Jason Esposito situation.  They are different players but profile and circumstances are very similar.  Both had good-looking offensive numbers while playing for one of the best teams in the nation in a very good conference.  Both were also outstanding defenders who were probably major league ready defenders as a collegian.  However, when you actually watch a bunch of their plate appearances against decent pitching you sense that the overall numbers were a mirage.  I had watched at least 8-10 Vanderbilt games the year Esposito was drafted and he padded his numbers against below average weekday pitchers while struggling against any pitchers with 90+ velocity or decent breaking balls.  I haven't seen as much of Grenier, but I wonder if he will have the same problems as Esposito.  I was very disappointed when we used a 2nd round pick on Esposito, and am worried about where we drafted Grenier.  I will give Rajisch the benefit of the doubt for now, but worry Grenier will struggle offensively as he gets to A+ or AA without a complete overhaul of his swing and approach.

I hope they overhaul his swing immediately, I keep hearing from people who saw him out of high school that he has the tools to be a good hitter.

That junk swing is hiding whatever bat speed he has and sapping any raw power.

There is no reason to think that they would not. Stewart as an example.

I thought I read that we were ready to pay him near slot.  It would be interesting if our guys woke up and realized we drafted this kid several round earlier than most teams and would thus be paying him a large amount more than those teams.  In other words, re-think the bonus offer and try to save a significant amount of $ to some of the kids outside the tenth round.

I guess that is said with the caveat that maybe the development guys think the swing can be fixed.

Will he become our top infield prospect?   I guess Mountcastle technically still counts as a fielder.
