I hear you- and Know we had some great moments with each of those guys- but not really that surprising IMHO:

Machado- massive re-sign risk- even for LAD

Britton- coming back from injury, rental

Gausman/Schoop- perennially inconsistent

Brach- off year

O’Day- injured

Plus everybody knew we wanted to clear the decks wherever we could- especially with Davis (and seemingly Jones) stuck in cement...

Just got back.  Whew - lot of prospect analysis.  Nothing new but I'll add to the slew of opinions:

  • Machado deal - good returns; I like Diaz a lot and Kremer looks like a sleeper
  • Britton deal - very good returns; I like Carroll and Tate a bit less but a top SP prospect nonetheless
  • Brach deal - all depends on how that international money is spent
  • Gasuman/Oday deal - worst of the lot; not much quality, O'Day obviously a salary dump, but dat INT money
  • Schoop deal - good returns; prospects look good, and didn't expect Villar

So I score it 3-1 in favor of DD with one TBD.  If the team gets VVM it's 4-1.

Villar is the most intriguing name of all the returns to me because he's been in the majors.  I would have targeted Shaw, but the Brewers just want to go ahead with a miserable IF defense I guess.

Here's the thing about Villar - he's 27, a FA after 2020, isn't costing much right now, and could end up a 2-win player this year.  He put up 4 wins in 2016.  He's a candidate to be extended. Whether or not he's worth it, I don't know - would like to see him in Camden Yards and revisit that topic in the off season.

Bear in mind the extension would only be for a couple years.  We wouldn't want him into his mid 30s.

I think people should actually look up pictures of the guy before making proclamations about fatness.

He doesn't look muscular to me, but, as a professional athlete, I'd wager he's far more fit than the average person with his build. 

That said, I'd also wager that the stats page underestimates his weight by 10-20 pounds.

No biggie ... If he rates 14 or anywhere close in Atlanta’s system he’s got the be higher in ours. I probably slot the two Milwaukee players in the same bucket

Is his defense that good?  It's got to make up for his poor offense:  71 OPS+ last season and 87 this season.  Does anyone have the scoop on why he declined so much after the 2016 season?

Villar hurt his back and then got really impatient at the plate post 16’. See this article,

      The Achilles heel for this team is going to be the unit that doesn't step up in the postseason. I can easily see scenarios where: the bullpen is hot and provides good performances but the offense sputters and isn't clutch the offense comes up big but the bullpen blows games late starting pitching tosses some clunkers (not really likely with Burnes and Eflin) and they can't recover the defense sucks and gives opponents extra outs to work with, blowing games open when the bullpen or SP would have been able to escape and continue We've seen all of these units falter at one point or another during this season.  We've also seen all of these units perform very well at different times throughout the season.  So, we'll see what turns out to be the Achilles heel for the Orioles in the playoffs starting next week.

      Nail hit on head. It really comes down to the offense in the playoffs for us. I think our pitching is good enough overall especially the starters. Shaky sometimes sure, but they can hold their own most of the time. If we don't bring our "A" hitting game in the playoffs we won't go far.

      The bullpen has warts for sure, but if this offense doesn't figure out how to hit good pitching in the playoffs, the bullpen won't matter. Even I got a little excited when they put 5 and 9 up on the board Tues and Wed, and then it crashed back to reality last night when I remembered they were facing Schmidt and Stroman. When facing a real ace like Cole they were completely shut down. What's gonna happen next week when they face Skubal, Reagins, and/or Lugo? The mediocre bullpen won't matter if they can't figure out how to score some runs off pitchers like that...

      Why carry four 1 inning guys over a LH long option? Cionel stinks and should not be on the roster over Povich when you still have Akin, Coulombe and Soto.

      Really would be nice to win tonight OR have DET lose so then they can play around Sat/Sun when the games would have no bearing on the seeding. Dont want this to come down to Sunday and having to win to get the 4 seed or then there will be some tough decisions that have to be made.
