Jonathan Villar- Our new 2B?

He's off to a good start, which is nice, and though it's only two games in, he does seem to bring an energy and speed threat that we haven't had in a long time.  He's arbitration eligible next year and remains under our control through the 2120 season.  It would be huge for this team if Villar regained his 2016 form, or even something close to it, as his trade value would spike notably. 

Again, I get it... it's way too early... but one can dream, right?

Schoop hasn't been around a rebuilding team. Sometimes you take on contracts to get the younger players, as long as they aren't too bad or too long. Villar is a good stopgap guy who had no value to the Brewers but might have value to the O's. I would not be surprised if Villar puts up a better year than Schoop sometime in the next 2-3 years. Although Villar is older, he actually has another year of control.

You don’t equate 0.0 dWAR with replacement level.    dWAR includes an adjustment for what position you play.   A 0.0 SS is not the same as a 0.0 1B.    In that scenario the SS is well below average and the 1B is well above average.    And, a half season of defensive stats is pretty worthless.

I’m interested in Villar.     He’s probably the closest thing we’ve had to a true leadoff hitter since BRob.

Villar has tools. Nothing wrong with a trade that works out for both teams.

Yeah, but I'm betting we see some sort of decline in his play over the next 100 years.

Yeah, I agree, but I think Schoop has the more "breakout" potential at any point while Villar has a lower ceiling.

Everyone cries that we don’t have guys with good OBP. Villar has a career .324 OBP and Schoop has a .294 OBP. Now, everyone is crying about the missed homers and Schoop’s ceiling. 

Oh and Villar has speed. And we also got a young SS and a pitcher with 225 IP in AA with good results that was a top 100 prospect just last year.

I'm really wondering why the Brewers traded Villar. He looks like a much more exciting and polished hitter than Schoop. He brings way more to the table. Villar looks exactly like they type of player a playoff team wants. I didn't see much of Villar before he became an Oriole. Maybe being traded motivated him?

They think Schoop can play SS. Villar can’t. So it must have been for positional value and Schoop’s power potential. Plus Villar was banged up and Schoop was healthy. 

So far so good for us. Way too early to evaluate the trade, but I think you can say the difference in the two players isn’t that much.  Villar has more control, and we picked up two really nice prospects.

A bunch of comments about Villar being in Counsell's "doghouse" for no particular reason. Sounds like possibly a Kim type of situation.

Range has never been Schoops strong suit. He definitely has the arm, but I don't see Schoop as even an average SS. But I see what your saying.

To me, Villar represents the start of getting away from that all or nothing approach at the plate and going more towards a more athletic take that extra base kind of offense.

Of course they are, Schoop has started off slow, Villar has been playing pretty well.
