Zimmermann Dominates In 3-1 Baysox Debut

BOWIE, Md. – LHP Bruce Zimmermann held the Hartford Yard Goats to a run over five innings to help the Bowie Baysox sweep a rain-shortened series with a 3-1 win in six innings in front of 6,530 at Dunkin’ Donuts Park Sunday evening.

In his first start since July 27 with Double-A the Double-A Mississippi Braves, the lefty made his first start as a member of the Baltimore Orioles farm system. After allowing a first-inning run, Zimmermann scattered three hits over the final four innings, striking out five Yard Goats (53-63).

Zimmermann evaded a couple potential Hartford threats through the middle innings of the scheduled doubleheader’s first game. After a fielding error placed a runner on second base with one out in the third inning, the native Marylander needed seven pitches to strike Dom Nunez out swinging and Roberto Ramos to fly out to Ryan McKenna in center field. Hartford led off the fourth inning with a pair of singles, but Zimmermann retired Brian Mundell, Brandon Bednar and Nelson Molina in order to prevent any further offensive threats. Ramos would step into the box as the tying run in the fifth inning, but struck out on four pitches to make the first game official.

That's really not what I was referring to.  I agree with you on those points.  My point was we don't use assets just to block the Yankees from going after a player.

A player that the Orioles would chose to sign. If the Yankees were out of the running.

Slot money that assure VV that his best money was in the Crab town.

True.  Now if they do follow this up with a trade of a million slot play for a 27 year old high A pitcher, I'm going to vent some more.   :)

Thanks for letting me vent.  You're a good man.

They gave away Brach for $250K in pool money and acquired this guy for $750K in pool money. If you think that is a solid, cogent plan, I don't know what to tell you.

Well I'll tell you this much, if it it is some kind of amazing plan, it's the most intricate thing they've done in years because confused at this point.

Unless it's a player that we want too.  And Victor 2 is a player that we want.

Here's my take, regardless of whether this hurts their chances of signing VVM (It doesn't), it still doesn't make any sense why they would basically just give 750K of signing space to the Phillies. The only thing I can think of that makes any sense is that they did this for "future considerations" or because they took up some their time for the failed Jones deal and they are "compensating" them for taking up that time with money they cant spend.

As for why they've been hoarding it before giving it away (I don't buy for a second they think the player is any kind of prospect and the Duquette comment is embarrassing to true baseball observers), it very well have been to let other teams know we are all in on VVM and if they got some money they might as well spend it because we are getting VVM.

None of any of this matters as long as they sign VVM. If they don't, it will be quite embarrassing for them and a huge step back.

Something I hadn't considered.

2nd year in a row that we’ve traded int’l slot money the Philly. Last year in the Kim trade too. I’m fine if it was just to relationship build since we may have had some failed trades with them recently, but we should’ve gotten something better back.

Did Philadelphia send slot money room to NY?

Gausman's performance is worth more money than he's getting paid - so saying a reason for the trade was saving Gausman's salary makes no sense.  O'Day's salary is why the payment in prospects was so low.  But part of the justification for the trade - as explained by Duquette - was to get the international slot money.

Every piece of that deal had a value.   It’s not all one thing.

As to Gausman being worth more than he’s getting paid, I ask “to whom?”     If you are 50 games out of first place, Gausman’s performance has no real value.   If you are fighting for a playoff spot, then it does.     I’d say the value of the players, salary relief and slots we received for Gausman were worth more to the Orioles than Gausman would have been worth to them under their circumstances, and less than what Gausman is worth to the Braves in their circumstances.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

By any measure, Cowser is leading AL rookies in WAR, and it’s not that close. “

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
