So just got the email from the Orioles about the changes.Mentions Rajisch,Anderson and Grahsm.I guess those would be the guys going to the Winter meetings if no one else in place.

I wouldn't see it taking 2 months to hire a GM.   Giants are in the same boat, and I found an article saying they hoped to have someone in place by the GM meetings Nov 6-8.

Of course if we don't have someone hired by next week there will be people on here assuming Brady has taken over and is running everything, with the Angelos brothers tied up in a basement somewhere.

Hopefully at least making lists.   Probably wouldn't ask to actually interview someone while Dan was still the GM.

The Giants fired their GM a few days ago.   Here is an article on how long they might take to find a replacement.   Seems like the GM meetings on Nov 6-8 might be a reasonable target.

I get letting Buck finish the season out but once the deadline deals were made it should not have taken 2 months to determine whether or not to keep Dan. I would have liked to see what he could do but I also understand wanting to start over. I just think we would be 2 months ahead of where we are now had they made that call then.

Would teams have let us interview their employees during the season?   I'm not sure.

I think it would be extremely difficult to hire someone from outside the organization mid season and ask him to make significant roster moves when he doesn't really know the players in the O's organization.  Once this team fell apart early on they probably decided to make Dan feel like he could be a big part of the "new direction"  to keep him totally invested in making credible trades.  They likely had Brady in the background making sure that all moves met his approval also before it was signed off on. Got to remember this team was supposed to compete this year.  It was just an awkward situation for everyone with all those expiring contracts.

Okay I concede you are right if you concede the organization is run by an old opened bag of taco shells.

Read Duquette's parting words. Classy message. The writing has been on the wall, but reading messages like this should remind everybody (myself included) that they may be GMs and managers to fans, but they’re still people with families. Very kind message he left to ownership, the city and to the fans.

Huh?   They are going to have to interview people.   Maybe bring the best candidates back for a second interview.

I know we have had really bad ownership but some of these leaps of logic are just crazy.   A hire like this will take time, they will probably interview four or five people.   How do you know they aren't "moving" on it?   How do you know who they have asked to meet with?   Or at least will ask to meet with tomorrow when the business day starts?

Brady is not Rasputin, with magical powers to influence people.   He isn't behind every little thing that happens or that we think might be happening because we aren't a fly on the wall at the warehouse.   He holds a position with the club.   Peter Angelos valued his opinion nad liked him, which was unfortunate because he made some bad recommendations.   It's been reported that Lou Angelos also likes him.   That doesn't mean that he is going to magically pull strings or that he is secretly running things.   Yes, if Lou listens to his opinions over that of his new president, that could lead to dysfunciton.   But there's no evidence that has happened with Lou.   And they are SAYING in their press release that they are going to hire a President from outside the organization and give that person full control over baseball decisions.   Now that could turn out to be a lie, it's probably smart to be alert to the possibility as we watch events unfold, based on past history.   But the idea that somehow Brady is using his Vulcan mind meld powers to run things is just paranoid silliness.   We have to take them at their word right now and see what happens next.

Well, I hadn't seen the quote about them looking outside the organization, but if they had Brady lined up it would make sense that they would let DD play out his contract. If they truly are hiring somebody, it doesn't make any sense to me why they wouldn't move earlier and let the new guy start the rebuild.

Does it make sense to keep a manager through the entire season when you were expecting to contend and were out of it by May 1st?

Mlb trade rumors...

7:10pm: The Orioles have announced that neither Duquette nor Showalter will be retained for the 2019 season. Director of player development Brian Graham will oversee baseball operations while the team conducts a search for an outside hire. He’s been with the team since 2007 and previously served as an interim GM for the Pirates as well.

“The club will hire an executive from outside of the organization to lead the Baseball Operations department,” the Orioles said in tonight’s press release. “Once in place, this individual will have the final determination on all baseball matters that he or she believes will make the Orioles successful on the field, entertaining to fans, and impactful in the community.”

I'm ok with that as long as he actually has the final say and everyone in the organization (including Brady) reports to him.  Ideally, I would like this new executive's first action to be firing Brady.

Would teams let you interview their front office personnel in the middle of the season?

I'm asking, I don't know.

How many mid-season GM changes are there, where the new permanent guy takes over mid-season?   I don't recall any but I'm sure someone will educate me if it's happened in recent history.   I just don't think that's how it's usually done.

Sure, if you are out of it.   What does it matter?   Especially if the replacement would just be an interim and the new GM would choose the real next manager after the season.

And when the current manager has over-achieved projections six consecutive years and is one of the winningest active managers in baseball, why humiliate him with an in-season firing?   Just to satisfy some fans with short memories who blame him for every player that is underperforming?

There aren't many, and the same goes for coaches.  Buck was out of work when we hired him.  You can't expect to replace Assistant GM's in the middle of the season, and neither can you replace coaches, because they have a ripple effect through the entire system.

    • My thoughts: - I agree that the Achilles heel is the bullpen and not the offense (especially with Westburg, Mountcastle, Urias, and Kjerstad back). - I also agree that Perez is overused in high leverage situations. This is going to come down to the degree you expect his “clutch” performance to be predictive going forward.  - I second the notion that most good bullpens are built with some degree of dumpster diving.  If you go back to offseason threads, there were not many desired bullpen FA targets (outside of unrealistic ones like Hader) that would have worked out well.  Maybe we haven’t “dumpster dived” well enough as evidenced by the success of Kaleb Ort in Houston. - Jacob Webb hasn’t been sharp since returning from the IL and Bowman has looked shaky his last few times out. - We don’t have a true closer, only a group of mostly effective set-up men in Dominguez, Cano, and Coulombe. - Part of me wishes they would be more aggressive with G-Rod and the Mountain. While we expect the team to continue to contend, you never really know how many times you’ll be back in the playoffs. However, I know in my head they are probably making the right decision. - I also feel like they should be auditioning McDermot, Selby, Young, or Strowd (who has been very good since August after rough Norfolk start). They could option Baker who I think is unlikely to have a path to trusted status after last year’s ALDS performance. This feeling may be mostly driven by dissatisfaction with the current state and wanting something better.  It might be unrealistic to expect options unproven at the MLB level to suddenly step in and be key playoff pieces.
    • Oh if we’re talking about what they will do, I can see it being something stupid like McCann at C and Adley at DH. I do think Mullins has enough veteranosity to outweigh Hyde’s obsession with L/R matchups.
    • I agree…just not sure the Os will feel that way.
    • Yeah I can see Rivera at DH. That’s probably a better choice than Kjerstad against Skubal. I’d definitely go with Mullins and Cowser over Slater. Slater has been really bad against LH this year. Only a .543 OPS. He’s actually worse than Cowser against LH and slightly better than Mullins.
    • Not that it matters, but for some reason I took a lot of heat for suggesting mid season that Basallo would end up #1. It’s all good. We don’t have to agree 100% on everything.
    • I don’t think he’s gonna be a part of any playoff roster, but kudos for him to rehab all the way back just to be an option for us if needed.  Also, hopefully now he’s shaken the injury and can have a normal offseason and normal fall instructs.  He’s a dude that if he could just be another Dean Kremer, would be huge for this org.
    • My guess is vs Skubal or Ragans, the Os will go with an IF of Gunnar, Westy, Mounty and Urias.  Rivera will DH. Santander starts in RF. Obviously one of Cowser or Mullins starts but do both of them start?  Would they start Slater? Lefties hit Ragans much better than righties do this year. Everyone is terrible vs Skubal although lefties are worse.
