Gavin Cecchini released by mets

This has to be a guy we look at for more infield depth.  He is still very young and a former 1st round pick that can play both second and short.  I know we already have Jackson and Martin but i would add him over the guy we picked up from th Yankees earlier this off season.  He hasn't quite hit in majors but the minor league numbers are very solid.

In 2017 he was their preseason #7 prospect according to mlb pipeline.

? Gavin Cecchini, SS, Grade B-/B: Age 23, first round pick in 2012; hit .325/.390/.448 with 48 walks, 55 strikeouts in 446 at-bats in Triple-A; went 2-for-6 with two doubles in the majors; when drafted he had a reputation for strong defense and questionable hitting; that’s flipped now; he can hit for average and makes constant contact but is a mediocre shortstop, with so-so range and arm strength and too many miscues; tools should work better at second base and could pair nicely with Rosario down the line; like Nimmo, would not surprise me to see a power surge in his late 20s. ETA 2017.

12. Gavin Cecchini, 2B/SS, Bats: R, DOB: 12/22/93, ETA 2019

2018 Stats (A+/AAA): .301/.347/.469/.816, 11 2B, 2 HR, 1 SB,

We’ve been talking a lot of upside and ceilings in these rankings so far. How about we switch it up with one of those high floor prospects. There’s not a lot of exciting tools here, but Cecchini puts the ball in play and has displayed an advanced plate approach and contact skills with a clean swing. The ceiling isn’t overly high here, but Cecchini should at least develop into a solid utility infielder. Think Brock Holt with a tad more pop.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 35 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50| Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Cecchini's father, Glenn, is a long-time high school coach who also served as USA Baseball's 18 and Under National Team's manager, and his brother Garin, is a long-time pro who has big-league time. Gavin has reached the highest level in 2016 and 2017, but whether the 2012 first-round pick is a regular or a utilityman remains to be seen.

Cecchini has above-average bat-to-ball skills, constantly barreling up the baseball and maintaining low strikeout rates throughout his career. While he has added some strength since signing and has more extra-base ability than fellow Mets infield prospect Luis Guillorme, a lack of pop limits his offensive upside. Defensively, Cecchini has been a bit enigmatic. He'll show an above-average to plus arm at times, more than enough to play shortstop, but he's had enough trouble making accurate throws that he is now primarily a second baseman, where he is solid defensively. Growing up around the game, he is a baseball rat who works tirelessly at improving his all-around game.

Cecchini will likely move around and play multiple positions as he tries to establish himself as a big leaguer, but the Mets still think he has enough hit tool, and just enough extra-base ability, to be an everyday second baseman if given the opportunity.

Could it be more a testament to how thin the Met's farm system is / was? Because these numbers aren't exactly speaking to me.

I'd take Cecchini over a couple guys on our current 40-man roster, but I don't see him as a must get option either. My question would be if the front office sees him as someone that can add a bit of pop as he's seemingly a .280/.340/.400 hitter in the minors without much stolen base speed or pop (though he does have some doubles).

I mean he has more middle names than home runs last season...

There's another thread floating around here from yesterday.  I believe the consensus was "maybe" but him OPSing .777 in the PCL is about equal to a .680 in Norfolk.  Do we value an infielder who might give us a .650 in Baltimore?

The article and several comments at MLBTR said his problem was injury and not ability. If he’s just “bad” then of course not, but if the injuries really derailed his production, he’s probably(probably!)an upgrade.

    • Wait, don't drag me into your fight.  remember not being thrilled with the O'Hearn signing because I thought the cost of a guy who was going to be AAA depth at #1.3 million was unnecessary. I do also remember saying that he did have some analytics that suggested he'll be better without the shift. Let's remember though, I thought Stowers was going to be a semi-regular between RF/LF/DH and not buried like they did early in the season last year.  I don't remember anyone thinking O'Hearn was going to have the year he ended up having.
    • I hope it was meant by a joke, but who knows?  You gotta think that for Elias to maintain the respect of his peers that he doesn't even make offers he knows are laughable.  The sad part is that Koby Perez might be able, and has been able, to authorize more money to "free agents" than Elias.
    • Say what you want about some of his International signings, he did sign Wei Yin Chen to a great deal!  I do think the current staff have more analytics to evaluate the talent on than Duquette's staff did so does make me feel a little better. Then again they thought they could fix Fuji too.
    • That was meant to be a joke.
    • What ridiculous comment? And you used OHearn as an example as how people don’t truly understand what Elias is doing. If you don’t understand something, you are clueless as to what is happening.  Tony was the largest voice against that signing. So, if you are saying that ohearn is an example of people not understanding, you are saying those who spoke out against that signing (and btw, you certainly weren’t excited about it) don’t understand what’s going on.
    • Considering Bradish came over in the trade, anything else that comes out of the Bundy trade is the proverbial icing on the cake. Stallings BTW came over with Jean Pinto for Alex Cobb, not the Bundy deal. He's one of the weirder pitching prospects I've seen in some time. He's about as Jekyll and Hyde as it gets from start to start sometimes. I do wonder if a move to the pen would benefit him though. He had a start on Sept 7th against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp that probably got him on the list, even if it's way down at the end. He was quite impressive that day missing bats with a variety of pitches and I believe he hit 95 MPH in that game (94.7).  Strangely, while Peek has much better command and gives off Spencer Watkins vibes, Stallings to me may have a better chance of becoming someone of value in a relief role.
    • Lol, so nowhere even close to the ballpark of the 7/$172M that he got. I don't know whether to be happy that we made a bid or embarrassed that it was so far off.
