Harper seems to be holding out hope another team will swoop in at the last minute to save him from signing with the Phillies.

The Phillies will be good really soon IMO. I think Harper wants to be on the left coast and not play for a dud. The Dodgers are probably where his market would be awesome, but I want to see him shock the world and sign with a team nobody could have predicted.

It seems that he wants to sign anywhere but Philly.  What exactly can you buy with $350 mill that you can't buy with $300 mill.

Scott Boras is the best at what he does and while I don’t think Harper is worth more than Machado  mark my words he will sign a larger record breaking contract.

Too bad for Boras Mike Ilitch still isn’t around, he might have been able to get him to bite on a record setting contract for Harper.

The Nats walked away.  Philly drew their line in the sand and aren't bidding against themselves.  Heyman is doing his best to pretend there's more to the market than them.  He's so transparent in his reporting, doing the bidding for Boras.  Read the comments every time Heyman tweets; they're brutal.  Boras overplayed his hand on this and can't figure out how to save face.

I know one thing.  After all the bitchin and whining by the players union about collusion, if Harper walks away from $300M to sign a short term deal with the Dodgers, he's going to have some splaining to do.

It wasn't really 300M.  Word is the offered deal had a lot of deferred money so the actual value was lower.

People love to hate Heyman, I don't get it.  So what if he gets dirt from Boras?

His tweets get posted here all the time (along with snarky comments) so he must be doing something right if people are paying attention to him.

There's a difference between "getting dirt" and actively being his PR guy trying to help create a phony market for which there's always a "mystery team."   Philly's owner flew out to Vegas and left with no imminent deal.
FWIW, on his podcast, Curt Schilling said he heard Harper had 10/$330M on the table from Philly, and that was before the Vegas trip.  Between that and the Nats rejected offer you have to shake your head at their strategy.  Reconcile that with talk of a short deal with, first it was SF,  and now L.A. for a high AAV.

    • I think it’s like when our fans are terrified because a team brings up a spot starter from AAA and we fear they are going to turn into Cy Young.
    • “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.” — A Bartlett Giamatti https://mason.gmu.edu/~rmatz/giamatti.html

By any measure, Cowser is leading AL rookies in WAR, and it’s not that close. “

    • Every year at the end of the season, I feel a little melancholy. For me, the end of summer is not the start of school or the arrival of fall, but the end of baseball season. Today is the last day of a long song, and I will miss it. I know we have at least four more days, but those are in a different category, although I will miss that too when it ends. During the darkest days of the season, I posted frequently that the worst day of baseball is still baseball. When the Os played terrible, I would go focus on the Brewers or the A’s or Mariners(who were almost as frustrating as the Os) and follow along with former Orioles, rooting for all of them. That will all stop by tonight, and I will miss it until next February, when pitchers and catchers report. If I’m still here, I’ll be here.    Go Os…
    • We have to wait and see. But it shouldn’t matter as you have to beat whomever you play.
