Isn’t that the problem? When you don’t know whether he’s going to walk 4 in a row or K four in a row it’s hard to put him into high-leverage spots.

Yes  his control is a problem.   He has to find more consistency.   Whether he belongs in the majors at this point is really a question of do the O's have anyone better.

It will be interesting to see how he develops.   A small uptick in control and he could be very, very effective.    But there’s no guarantee he can achieve that.

Absolutely. It is no exaggeration to say that he could be Randy Johnson, if only he could find his inner Randy Johnson.

If you had the context of seeing Scott come up through the O's system and the vast and steady improvements he's made, you'd understand why I feel comfortable with projecting him as a leverage arm. He's a guy who used to walk everyone against hitters who swung at junk. He used to throw 30% noncompetitive pitches, his slider was a 40 at best, it's an easy 60 now, maybe more. He's 24 and had the best xFIP on the team (24th in baseball), the 15th best K rate in all of baseball.

And that was without his top velocity.

It appears the Jays have DFA'ed Dwight Smith Jr. He appears to still have an option and while our OF is probably one of our deeper areas going forward, Smith may be an interesting guy who has looked good in small samples in the big leagues. Is he worth a look?

I don’t think it’s a Dwight Smith vs EY Jr debate. I think it’s a Dwight Smith vs a Pitcher debate. We’re a little thin with position players on the 40 man.  So is Smith more valuable that Osich?  I have Osich behind Bleier, Scott, Fry, Rogers, and Means as far as LH relief options go.

I’d waive Osich for Smith. Smith could provide a nice bridge(with a prayer of upside) until the young OF are up full time.

Great call by both of you! Spot on.

i enjoyed watching his father when he played with the Cubs, and turns out Smith Sr was with the Orioles in 1994.  I totally don’t remember this.

I remember it, for some weird reason.  He didn't play that much but I remember when the Orioles got him cause I thought he was pretty good.
