Can I get a hallelujah from the congregation! That was a game! An ACE game if I ever saw one. Game score of 94 if I calculated correctly. Many a year that's the best pitched game in the majors - better score than quite a few no hitters.

Boy, besides that HR rate(which is flukey right now), they certainly look like #1 starter numbers to me.

That's not only the best game score for the year... that's the best game score in the AL since ESPN's archive begins in 2002. Third best game score in the past 5 years, behind Schilling and RJ who both had 100s.

It's an inconsequential little tool, but wow. What a game...

ESPN gives Bedard a 98! Verlander and Buerhle's No-nos were 95 and 94. There are typically a handful of 90+ game scores each year. ESPN's list (link) has nobody at 98 since at least 2002.

Bedard seems to be very close to Hernandez and he certainly seems to pitch worse with another catcher back there.

From what Trembley said after the game Bedard was still hitting 97 in the 9th inning according to the radar gun at the stadium

I don't know if you are aware of this wonderful stat created by ESPN but it is called the "Pitchers' Game Score".

The formula is this:

Start with 50 points.

Add 1 point for each out recorded, (3 points per inning).

Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.

Add 1 point for each strikeout.

Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.

Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.

Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.

Subtract 1 point for each walk.

Justin Verlander's no-hitter of 95 and Buehrle's no-hitter at 94 lead the league...

...until tonight.

Erik Bedard's Game Score tonight was 98, thanks largely to the absent of walks. Ranger's announcers were saying in the 8th inning that Bedard's performance seemed better than Buehrle's no-hitter against them earlier that season.... they were right.

Now my only question is whether or not this game the type of hype that Felix Hernandez's one hitter (a mere 89 GSC) or either of the no-hitters this season. My guess is, sadly, no.
