From what Trembley said after the game Bedard was still hitting 97 in the 9th inning according to the radar gun at the stadium

Yea i heard him say that but the MASN gun had him lower than that.

Either MASN is slow or the stadium is fast....Not sure which.

He might still be feeling it some...He wasn't really above 93 tonight and worked mostly in the 90-92 range.

I think it was Palmer who said that he was still hitting 97 in the late innings, which he probably saw on the stadium's radar gun on one of the scoreboards. I think the radargun that we were seeing on TV was slow.

EDIT: A poster above already said it, guess it was Trembley who said that. Damn my bad memory!

BTW, did you guys notice the embrace between Bedard and Ramon?

Bedard seems to be very close to Hernandez and he certainly seems to pitch worse with another catcher back there.

It was noticeable. I think sometimes it is overlooked how important it is to have a competent catcher back there.

I did and it made me very, very happy. Apparently, Trembley realizes Bedard isn't a 6'4", 230 lb drive and drive pitcher or a finesse guy. He shouldn't be throwing more than 115 pitches unless it is a very, very special cause. Good for Trembley. He impresses me more and more every single game.
Yea, i liked it as well, especially since he is going through a dead arm....Could really have damaged himself.

Luckily, this didn't matter.

VaTech...What's your assessment about him tonight?(i know you are impressed but how much?)

You don't think letting Bedard finish out what was by far the best game of his career and also one of the best games pitched in this decade is a special cause?

I realize he wasn't throwing a no hitter, but this was a special performance. I'd have been ticked if Bedard got pulled, unless he said he was too tired to go on.

It is also why i have a harder time trading Ramon(at least right now) than almost any other player on the team.

Not that i wouldn't for the right offer but it would be tough.

The problem is that he has admitted to having a dead arm.

Anytime you do have that and get pushed even a little too far, you really risk injury.

Anyone know how many first pitch strikes he ended up with?

I think i heard Hunter say 14 of the first 17 batters saw a first pitch strike.

I know 1970 has mentioned this a lot this year, how he wanted to see him get that number up from earlier in the year.

BTW, Palmer is right...First pitch strike is the best pitch in baseball.

Ah I didn't hear him admitting to that, I thought it was just speculation on our part.

Did Guthrie admit to it too?

No but his stuff wasn't good last night and he wasn't throwing as hard, so i am sure he has one.

The AS break is coming at a good time and i am glad Trembley isn't changing the rotation...Give Guthrie, Bedard and DCab some extra time off...All are on pace to shatter their best IP totals.

Well, let me say this. I've seen him this nasty several times before at points in games, sometimes for several consecutive innings. I've never seen him this nasty and consistent in every single inning.

To be honest, the umpire tonight was giving several inches off both corners which helped tremendously, but regardless it was a phenomenal performance.

I will say that it has been a very long time since I've seen any pitcher with that much consistentcy and control over the heighth of that nasty of a curveball. Usually with a curve that breaks that much, you are bound to leave about 1 in 6 up a bit in the zone. Likewise, you occasionally throw a 58 footer. Bedard has an uncanny ability to throw that curve so that it starts between thigh and belt high and it breaks between the knees and the ground. He throw ONE high curve all night tonight that I saw. It was the ball Laird hit to center the second time up. The last guy that virtually always had a nasty curve and almost always kept it between the ankles and thighs was Bert Blyleven.

The guy is a bad-a$$. If you keep him fresh by not throwing him more than 115 pitches ever and get him out of there with 95-100 every 3rd start or so, he is going to be a great pitcher for a long, long time.

Best curve in the AL IYO?
