Nothing much...I'm just a stats kind of guy and a lot of you prolly saw this, but I think it is kewl that he has the 'best pitched game of the year' according to ESPN and its point system.

(Looking at Cy Young Candidates...can you believe Maine is ranked 3rd. No way he'll get it, but it is still amazing. I guess the amazing lineup of the Mets helps him a lot. I wonder what Bedard's record would be like if he were on the Mets)

We went over this - it's the highest game score since Randy Johnson's 13-strikeout perfect game in 2004. Easily the best-pitched game all year, and there's really little reason to believe that will change (Verlander allowed more baserunners in his no-hitter thanks to 4 walks, Buehrle got more help from his defense and only allowed one fewer baserunner.)

Of course, now that I've typed this, Santana's going to go out and pitch a 19 strikeout perfect game the first game after the ASB :P

I have not read the book, but my feeling is that the Neyer/James method tries to predict who the voters will name CY Young, not necessarily show who is the best pitcher. Accordingly, any CY predictor will be skewed by Wins/Losses as the voters bias them heavily.

Thus, Bedard (despite his impressive K's - he has 3 of the top 10 strikeout games in the AL this year) will not show up in the CY Predictor, whereas Maine and his 10 wins will.

Note: I just looked at the actual formula, and bonus points are given to players on teams that are division leaders. So Maine gets added points here too.

Now see, what I heard is that Bedard pitched the best game of the year

Well wax my mustache! I had no idea. I had only heard faint rumblings and rumors that the game in question was the best pitched game of the year!

If only some thoughtful Hangouter were to post a link to a website that gives information about recent sporting events, that we might finally know the truth!

THEY BETTER HOPE THIS ORIOLE DOESN'T MIGRATE SOMEWHERE ELSE

"If I throw a complete game, I throw a complete game. If I don't, I don't. Today we won, and that's all that counts."

--Orioles ace Erik Bedard, on his 15-K complete game against the Rangers.

"Finally, he threw a ball."

--anonymous Rangers hitter, in-game against Bedard to catcher Ramon Hernandez.

"One of the base hits came to me, but for the most part, I was useless out there in the outfield. It's a matter of trying to sit there and watch it. It's like, man, these guys don't have much of a chance. I don't care who was hitting tonight, it wouldn't have mattered much."

--Orioles outfielder Jay Payton

"It's as good of a night as I've ever seen a pitcher throw. I've never seen so many bad swings in my life. Guys didn't have a chance."

--A suspiciously unreflective Jay Gibbons, Orioles DH

"Leo told him, 'Well, we're getting to that point where it's about time.' Bedard just kind of shrugged his shoulders and said, "OK." That's how he is. The guy is amazing. He doesn't see himself like we see him. The guy is outstanding. You go talk to him, don't talk to me."

--Orioles manager Dave Trembley

"That's with some of the all-time great ones I've had the privilege of witnessing. Twenty seven up, 27 down. That's a two-hit perfect game."

--Orioles pitching coach Leo Mazzone, on Bedard.

"I've played with two good left-handers in the past with [barry] Zito and [Mark] Mulder, and you know what? Tonight he looked like one of them. It was unbelievable."

--Catcher Ramon Hernandez (Jeff Zrebiec, Baltimore Sun)

    • It's a good thing Irvin only cost the Orioles this guy: I was pretty skeptical of Hernaiz being anything more than a utility guy and had no issues with moving him for a guy who could potentially help in the rotation. This problem with Irvin is he went from this guy in 2023: to this guy in 2024: Don't worry though, we could lose Irvin because we have this guy in AAA who we gave up Norby and Stowers for:
    • I am "old school" and I don't disagree, but it also doesn't have to be either/or in my opinion. I would substitue the word "tiring" for "obnoxious" above. 😀 I admittedly don't understand all the data and look at some of it in bewilderment. You can teach old dogs new tricks but it takes longer. I'm trying to learn and follow but still hang on to what I know best. (My smart phone ain't real smart either!!!!!) I suspect I may not be alone in the realm of Oriole fandom.
    • I agree.  But I also think batting Kjerstad fourth was inane.  He's a rookie and he's just coming off the DL.  Put him lower in the lineup.
    • I guess we'll find out over the offseason.  The danger is that Elias looks at Eflin, Grayson, Suarez and Kramer as a solid 1-4, assumes that Povich, McDermott and Rogers can battle it out for the fifth slot, and then decides we don't need to try to get a front line starter to replace Corbin Burnes.
    • The offense looked bad the day we almost got no-hit. It honestly looked okay yesterday. Adley smashed the ball leading off the 2nd into a lineout (Cowser doubled later in the inning). Santander smashed into a lineout in the 8th before Adley's HR. The Tigers basically out-homered us but we were getting baserunners on and taking better at-bats overall. The complaints about the lack of situational hitting/smallball are misguided IMO. A homer-heavy lineup can get the job done if the homers are hit. There are some slumps and some holes in the lineup (injury replacements for Westburg, Mountcastle, and Urias) who can't make up for the slumping players like they did early in the year.
    • The underlying metrics always suggested Norby was due for serious regression, but some people are just desperate not to give Elias credit because they need to be able to point to some single, solitary thing and say, "This is why we're underperforming!" and the guy running the show is the obvious target. I think Norby and Stowers have value as major leaguers, but long-term I don't think they're guys we're going to miss. Entirely possible Trevor Rogers is someone forgettable as well. I guess sometimes both teams lose trades.
