I don't think the runner from first knew he was no longer forced and had to be tagged.   He came to a stop and Villar tagged him.

He could have slid, which might have made putting the tag on a little more difficult.   Or he could have stopped and turned around and forced us to run him down... given how many errant throws we've made that wouldn't be a sure thing either.
