MUDCATS SWEEP KEYS

FOUR HOME RUNS POWER CAROLINA TO VICTORY

ZEBULON, NC. – For just the third time this season, the Frederick Keys (28-29) were swept with an 10-3 loss to the Carolina Mudcats (33-25) on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. After the Keys tied it 3-3 in the sixth inning, Tristen Lutz hit a two-run home run to give the Mudcats a 5-3 lead before they erupted for a five-run, eighth inning. It was Lutz’s second home run on an evening in which Carolina hit four dingers. With the loss, the Keys fall to below .500 for the first time since May 21.

The Keys almost came out unscathed in the first inning. After Wes Rogers walked and advanced to third after stealing a base, he was gunned out at home by J.C. Escarra on a fielder’s choice, but then the Mudcats went to work. With a runner on and two-outs, Mario Feliciano hit a triple to center field to score a run, and Payton Henry hit the next pitch over the right field wall to give Carolina a 3-0 lead.

Frederick put a man on in each inning until they finally broke the scoreboard in fifth after Sean Miller and Yeltsin Gudino singled to open up the inning. A throwing error by shortstop Devin Hairston scored Gudino from third to make it 3-1 before Mudcats’ starter Matt Smith was replaced. Smith lasted 4.2 innings and gave up three hits and an unearned run.

The Keys scored on another error in the sixth inning, this time from infielder Eddie Silva, that scored Zach Jarrett and put Jean Carrillo at second base. Carrillo later scored on Gudino’s two-out single to tie the game 3-3.

Lutz’s home run in the bottom of the frame came off of Cameron Bishop (0-4) who completed six innings for just the second time this season. Bishop gave up five runs on five hits, including two home runs, a double and a triple, while striking out four.

Luis Perez pitched a flawless seventh inning but lost control in the eighth. After hitting a batter, he gave up back-to-back home runs to Lutz and Feliciano that put the Keys in an 8-3 hole. He then hit the next two batters, both who later scored on a miss-thrown pickoff attempt and a single from Hairston.

Christian Taugner (2-4) prevented the Keys from capitalizing on a first and second, two-out situation in the seventh. He earned in the win after allowing two unearned runs on three hits over two innings.

Lutz finished with four RBIs and three runs scored, while Feliciano went 5-for-12 with three home runs, a triple and four RBIs in the three-game series.

The Keys will face the Down East Wood Ducks for the first time this season following a scheduled off-day on Wednesday, June 5. Frederick will face LHP John King (0-0, 2.66) with first pitch slated for 7:00pm on Thursday, June 6.
