How much longer do we have to wait?

I know this has been discussed over and over on here, but when are we finally going to see Wieters in Baltimore? He went 3-3 tonight with 3 walks raising his Bowie Avr to .369. There comes a point and time when you have to stop worrying about rushing this guy. I think he has shown he is a man among boys in the minors and is ready to be THE MAN in the majors.

I know everyone wants to see him but I think you will have to wait to next year. Quite possibly to May of next year. There is no real reason to bring him up this year. The decisions that are being made are aimed at what is good for the franchise long term, not how we can win 2 more games this year. I think that is the mindsight that everyone wanted the organization to take. Let Wieters tear it up. He will be here soon enough and hopefully when he gets here it will be for good. Years ago moving players one level a year was part of the Oriole Way.

I have heard the argument for keeping Wieters in the minors until next May so he can get an extra year of service time, but I really can't see the Os doing that. Why would they do this with Wieters when they didn't do it with Markakis? He joined right out of Spring Training. Personally I would like to see us get Hernandez through waivers, trade him, and bring up Wieters to be our starting catcher for the next 10-15 years.

I would keep Hernandez for a little while longer. If I were Trembley, I could split catching duties between Hernandez and Wieters to get Wieters acclimated to it, and when he is not catching, DH him.

Split Aubrey Huff at Third with Melvin Mora.

Hopefully Teixeira will have signed, so that will add an extra bat as well.

keep smoking that stuff

So...what do you think are the chances of us signing Teixeira? I haven't seen any snarky comments from you about it in the past five minutes.

And would you mind posting them in every single thread on the board? That way I won't have to worry about forgetting where you stand.

Much appreciated.

I don't think you'll see him until Bowie's season is over. With them in they playoff race he's needed more there than here. I could see him called up after that however.

Right, because what's a month or more of experience both facing and catching major league (or even Triple-A) pitchers when Bowie can win the Eastern League.

I don't want to be too sarcastic, but why on Earth should something like that come ahead of the overall good of the organization.

How about he is the best catcher in the organization? Should that play a role. If they keep Hernandez through the year and we don't see Wieters until OD 2009 I am ok with that, but Wieters is the best catcher in our organization.

The plan with Nick in 06 was to send him down. He had an incredible spring and forced his way onto the team. The same could happen with Wieters, but it is a little tougher for a catcher IMO. I do not think Wieters will see Baltimore this year, but I do think when he arrivess it will be with the aim that he becomes the starting catcher for a long time. Playing games with the service time while somewhat distasteful keep a player like Wieters under club control for a longer time. Wieter's agent is Scott Boras, do not undervalue control. Boras certainly will not.

Some organizations feel it's beneficial for a core of their future to win coming up through the system. The team is "just AA" for the guys at Bowie. It's their team and they want to win. I could see keeping him down there for a playoff push alongside Reimy, Tillman, Hernandez, Spoone, etc.

    • Hopefully when he signs with someone else.  Until then it's a risk.
    • I don't even want my mind to go there. I don't think I can endure another cheap ownership and be a fan. For now I'm going to keep the faith that they won't be. It could be Elias being too conservative AGAIN then lack of commitment from ownership if they aren't very active in FA again
    • I have to laugh how different baseball is from football. Here Elias is saying he is in the information gathering stage when FA has already started and then you have football where you had Rex Ryan at Bart Scott's front door at the stroke of midnight in the start of football FA years ago. Crazy how the 2 sports works.
    • Pinto seems to be Eflin’s guy with McCann not coming back. For a team with budget constraints, is it really worth it pay McCann more than the league min?  I say no.  Also, it would be harder to get rid of McCann mid season in the clubhouse when we believe Basallo is ready.
    • I find Elias's comments when asked about Coloumbe kind of troubling. Sounds like business as usual for the Orioles. Translation: don't expect much, we're cheapskates ... "I think any time you look at option decisions, you're looking at price point on a salary and you're looking at putting together a budget and a plan for the offseason that encompasses the entirety of your roster, and in particular the bullpen. And then, ultimately, it comes down to a fit and your talent evaluation, and the fit that you see going forward. We had hard decisions in both directions with these option decisions. Sometimes, you make a decision not to kick off your offseason with exercising an option, but you remain in position to stay in touch with a really good player, and Danny's somebody who has done a ton for us, been enormously successful the past couple of years and we really enjoyed having him, and he's somebody that we're going to want to continue talking to throughout the free agency, as long as that lasts. But I'm sure he's going to have a lot of good opportunities, and we'll see where it goes"
    • I would have  took Preston Smith for a 7th.  Damn like the Steelers really needed him. I'm just not feeling a SB at all. This defense just isn't going to get it done in a big game. Thanks DeCosta for taking another year off of Lamar"s chances. A 4th for Ojulari wouldn't had been a bad deal.
    • Ok but I think many Orioles fans and the Orioles themselves would want the less years and not care so much about the  yearly salary especially with pitchers.
