Which players in the O's organization have the highest ceiling?

including the 2019 draftees. (By Position)

Here are my guesses:

1B  Mancini - Probably at his peak now.  His combined offense and defense  may out shine Mountcastle.

2B Villar -  Over Bannon

SS   Adam Hall   -  Offensive and defensive ceiling over Martin

3B  Henderson-  over Ruiz

LF Smith

CF Hays

RF Diaz

C Rutschman

DH Mountcastle

UIF Martin

Backup catcher  -  Severino over Sisco

4th OF  Santander  - over Stewart. Since Hays and Diaz can both play CF.

25th man - Stewart over McKenna

SP1 Grayson Rodriguez

SP2 DL Hall

SP3 Rom

SP4  Means - On what he has done this season

SP5 Harvey  - On his pure talent now that he is playing healthy.  Over what Bundy is today.

RP1  Givens

RP2  Sedlock - On what is did in college and how he is doing now

RP3 Kremer -  The stuff he showed last season ranks high

RP4  Kline  - Love his stuff.  He just needs experience

RP5  Lowther -  Innings eater

RP6 Bundy over Akin

RP7  Knight  over Hanifee

What is your 25 with the highest ceiling?

Just as a sidebar...even in 2011, Jose Altuve who had been in the Astros system since 2007 was still only  their 13th rated prospect and was still felt to have a limited ceiling due to his size and Dallas Keuchel was only rated 14th and seen then even in 2011 as a 5 starter at best if he kept progressing.

Stuff changes (mainly developing talent in better ways that then ends up surprising the predictions)  Hopefully we will develop talent currently in our system much better than in the past.

This is a good exercise. I think you’ve oscillated a little bit with adding in floors (over ceiling alone), but I like the idea. Here’s mine:

C - Rutschman

1B - Mancini/Mountcastle

2B/SS/UTIL - Hall/Henderson/Carmona

3B - Encarnacion

LF/RF - Diaz/Santander

CF - Hays

DH - Mountcastle/Mancini

Backup C - Severino

4th OF - McKenna

Bench - Stowers

Rotation:

Hall

GrayRod

Peralta

Kremer

Akin

Pen:

Castro

Givens

Scott

Bundy

Baumann

Harvey

Lowther

How does Severino have a higher ceiling than Sisco? Might have a higher probability of hitting it, but I just don’t see how one could say the absolute top of his ceiling is higher.

Huh?

Sicso will never have Severino arm.   That puts him at a disadvantage as a catcher.  In fact, Severino has proven that the can catch in the majors IMO.   Sisco has not  and he may have to move positions at some point if he can not control the running game IMO

I don't get how people can think so highly of Harvey at this point. He has a 5.91 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 82.1 IP over the last two seasons at Bowie. He missed all of 2015 and barely threw at all in 2016 and 2017 due to elbow problems. He's had problems with shoulder instability and forearm injuries as well. His ceiling is no longer a starter IMO. He should be tried as a closer, but starter? No way.. he's never made it to AAA and doesn't seem like he's gonna make it at this point as his performance has suffered greatly. He can't even get out of Bowie at this point as a starter. It's time for him to reinvent himself as a closer and see what happens. His stuff isn't the same anymore after all those injuries, but maybe he can have some resurgence as a reliever/closer with fewer innings required of him.

As far as SIsco, I've never been overly impressed with him. Severino has been more interesting so far this year. He has improved his walk rate every year for a few years now which indicates a change of approach. If he can continue to produce like this (which is a big IF), he will establish himself as a starting catcher. The only way he should ever be put into a backup role is if he regresses, but considering the steady progress he has made over the last few years, I do think it's possible that Severino has legitimately improved his game to a sustainable level. Sisco is more likely to be a career backup than anything else. Severino could go either way, but he's far more interesting right now than Sisco has ever been for me.

That’s a fair response, but I would say as this discussion pertains to “ceiling,” I think it’s also fair to say that if he can stick at catcher he has sufficient offensive upside to be the superior player.
