Harrisburg, PA – Jesmuel Valentin and T.J. Nichting each hit a home run and drove in three as the Bowie Baysox defeated the Harrisburg Senators 6-2 on Friday night. The win was the Baysox fourth in a row, and moved Bowie to 3-0 in the second half.

After neither team was able to plate a run in the first inning, Willy Yahn reached for the Baysox on a two-out single in the second. The next batter was Valentin, who promptly sent his fifth home run of the season over the fence in right field, making it 2-0 Bowie.

The game remained 2-0 until the fifth, when Valentin and Preston Palmeiro each singled to lead start the frame. Nichting then hit an opposite field single, scoring Valentin and extending the Baysox lead to 3-0.

Harrisburg scored its first run of the night in the sixth off Baysox starter Alex Wells. However that was all Wells would allow on the night, tossing 5.1 innings and picking up his fifth win of the season. Wells was relieved by Cristian Alvarado, who retired all eight batters he faced on the night.

With Bowie leading 3-1 in the seventh inning, Palmeiro doubled with one out, for his third hit of the night. He was followed by Nichting, who hit his second home run of the year, making it 5-1. Valentin added an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly.

The Senators scored once in the ninth, but Tyler Erwin picked up the final three outs of the night, earning the Baysox the win.

The second game of the series will be Saturday night at FNB Field in Harrisburg at 6:05 p.m. Dean Kremer will make the start for Bow

Blue Rocks Shutout Keys

  Frederick Keys News Release

For Immediate Release: June 22, 2019

BLUE ROCKS SHUTOUT KEYS

KEYS SET FRANCHISE RECORD WITH 15 CONSECUTIVE ROAD LOSES

WILMINGTON, DE. – The Frederick Keys (29-42, 0-2) were held in check as the Wilmington Blue Rocks (46-25, 2-0) shutout the offense 7-0 on Friday night. The Keys were held to just two hits as they dropped their eighth straight game, tying a season-high losing streak set earlier this month. With the loss at Frawley Stadium, the Keys have now lost 15-straight road games, resetting a franchise record 14-straight back in 2017.

Brenan Hanifee (4-7) struggled in the first inning. Daniel Fajardo erased a lead-off walk by gunning out a runner trying to take second base, but the next two batters tallied singles to put runners at the corners. That led way to Dennichur Carrasco’s double that cleared the bases to give Wilmington an early 2-0 lead.

Hanifee needed just 15 pitches to get through the second and third innings but hit a wall in the fourth.

He allowed the first three runners to reach to load the bases and Nick Pratto singled home a run to make it 3-0. With no-outs in the inning, Cristian Perez hit a line drive into right field and Zach Jarrett laid out on a diving catch that prevented a run from scoring. Hanifee then got a force out at home to get two-outs but with the bases still loaded, Rudy Martin got ahold of one and crushed it to dead-center field, clearing the bases to make it a 6-0 game.

Hanifee allowed one more run on a sacrifice fly. He lasted six innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs while walking three. It was the most amount of runs and hits allowed by Hanifee since April 23.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Martinez was outstanding, tossing six scoreless innings striking out six and walking three.

The Keys and Blue Rocks return to action on Saturday, June 22. LHP Cameron Bishop (0-6, 5.90) will start for Frederick opposite LHP Daniel Tillo (4-6, 5.23). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm. Fans can listen to the game at frederickkeys.com or on the TuneIn app with pregame coverage starting at 5:50pm.

The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. Following the 2018 season, the Keys were named the winner of the Carolina League’s Complete Franchise Award. This goes to a team in the league which demonstrates franchise stability and significant contributions to its community and the league. In 2019, the team will host the Carolina League All-Star Classic presented by Visit Frederick. @justD and I attended this game. Wells was fancy. He worked out of all the trouble that presented itself. He did not appear overpowering but he works his stance and his feet to create deception. Ryan Zimmerman had no real success against him. Later after a single went off Palmiero's glove (his defense other than this was exceptional) Wells just walked Ryan to deal with someone he felt better against.  He only allowed that one run, and honestly it was probably an error scored as a hit. The Bowie infield defense was outstanding, Valentin appears be a heady player. Yahn made several great plays and Bannon was fantastic going back smoothly on an uncatchable ball that he caught easily.  No dive, no fuss, no muss. Diaz is a man among boys. He is truly a five tooler and in each aspect of his game he causes disruption and attention. The ball sounds different coming off his bat.  Alvarado was pure money. Just wonderful.  Erwin shaky, but he tightened  it up and sealed it.

We will be back tonight and tomorrow.

Talk about a team that literally turned its season around, the Baysox had a terrible first month and a half, but have been playing great baseball since. Good for them.

PS: I am interested in feedback and thoughts on Kremer as he is on the bump tonight. Thanks!

I liked him last year when I went to see him. I'll tell you if he seems any different tonight. Thanks for the interest.

Luke: Small steps right? The Orioles Minor League system is unquestionably improved from last season. This includes performance levels for existing players, the cultural shift regarding winning and the newer players. For the truly hopeless among us, I suggest you look to the Orioles Minor League system for a glimmer of hope.
