if they strictly enforced seat assignments most people would just stay in their cheap seats, or they wouldn't buy tickets at all.  I think the number of people who'd buy more expensive seats under a more restrictive policy are negligible.

Not to mention, you might run into further harm if you make attendee's gameday experience worse through an overly aggressive enforcement of that rule (other than maybe for very premium seats).  I don't think people necessarily expect to be able to move when things are full or closer to it, but when it's completely empty it seems like you may do more harm to your product through such a plan.

Agreed.  If you ask me, making the Orioles' fan experience even more punitive is a marketing strategy with a lot of promise.

Right.  Seat Nazis are acceptable if the place is pretty packed and idiots are swooping in to try to steal briefly unoccupied box seats.

They're annoying when the park is at 20% of capacity and you're moving from waaaay out in the outfield to not so far in the outfield.  One of the last years the Expos were in Montreal I went to a game and essentially the entire crowd was between first and third.  I seriously doubt everyone bought box seats.  It was part of the run-down charm of Le Stade Olympique.

Actually... if they'd make it more punitive for visiting fans I'd be all for it.  When selling tickets they need to ask "home or away?"  All the away fans are put in sections 382-388 (top half of upper deck, behind LC).  If you come to the park having misrepresented yourself (said home, wear Yanks stuff) you're politely escorted by secuirty to sections 382-388.

Years ago at Memorial Stadium when the O's were very good the Ushers would check tickets and enforce the seating for the first 2 or 3 innings. After that you could pretty much sit where you want. They seemed to enforce ticket seating at Camden Yards in the 90's but the crowds were pretty big. I haven't been to a game for quite some time now so I have no idea how it is now.

That’s great. My parents didn’t force me to say yes sir or no sir. Yes mam or no mam. I had to have respect for adults no matter what race. It’s good to have a young man that is respectful.

They are pretty restrictive right now in section 8/10 area. Maybe it's just the main usher (who many refer to as "the Nazi") who does nothing but patrol his two sections with an iron fist. I've seen him chase away three 20 somethings who moved down to a portion of the section where there was no one occupying a seat five rows deep in the 5th inning, only for him to sit behind him and then over and ask for their tickets stubs. Just a real jerk move.

Of course this is the same guy who came down to tell me I must sit in my seat while I was standing talking to some people before the game while the pitcher was warming up.

It's a completely different tradition and atmosphere, but I've been to professional soccer games where people give you weird looks if the game is on and you're not standing up.  Standing terraces have been greatly reduced for safety reasons but they're still common in some places like Germany.  If you're a real fan you stand the whole game. No usher would dare tell you otherwise.

I get not having people at baseball games blocking your view, but I'd hope the ushers would be nice about it and not care if nothing is going on on the field.

I wish they’d pay attention to vendors blocking your view.    That’s a constant problem where I sit, just on the RH side of the aisle near 1B 13 rows back.    I constantly have someone hawking beer, hot dogs etc. blocking my view of home plate.   For that matter, tell that damned Bird to get off the dugout roof!

At Miami games, in the Orange Bowl, sit down at your own risk.

They cemented this view in my mind.  I've mentioned this before, but the Manny Ramirez 500 homer game where even the restaurants in the Warehouse were overwhelmed by jerks in 3rd alternate Dustin Pedroia jerseys was a low point in my Oriole fandom. The infestation at least needs to be contained.

We sat over near Manny during batting practice on Tuesday. An usher politely asked us if those were our seats or if we were just there for a while. I told her we were just watching from there and she was fine with that. Very polite. Unlike previous years in those premium seats.
