Johnny Rizer 2019

Our seventh round draft pick, Johnny Rizer, had a special night tonight in Aberdeen.  He only went 1 for 5, but the hit was a home run off a rehabbing Noah Syndergaard.  I wish him the best in the coming years, but even if he never makes the major leagues, he'll be able to tell his grandkids that he hit a home run off Thor.

Nice.

Check out this highlight I just found of a home run robbery. Sick catch!

He rose to the occasion on that one!

If I'm not mistaken, he went 5-5, with 3 runs, 3 RBI, and, oh by the way, hit for the cycle.  Joey Ortiz starting to pick it up too.  Good night for Watson as well.

No walks. Don’t think this guy will make it. Should probably trade him at peak value.

Young man had himself quite the night. For a  senior sign who was signed for 10K to save money, he's off to quite the start to his pro career.

Seems like he’s a fun guy to follow.   Hopefully he’ll rize higher than, say, Jake Ring.

Kyle Stowers "interviews" the young riser here after the cycle "fait accompli":

Gotta like the Rizer, and Welk, signed early.  They came to play. They lead the team in PA and OPS.

There was a thread about a good JUCO/community college coach signing with the O's to be the hitting coach at Aberdeen. Do you think the early success of Rizer (Welk and others as well) has to do with that coach, good drafting, or just being old for the league? Or all of those things?

They certainly have started off real good. Welk has quite the hit tool, but limited power so far.

Here’s an article on hitting coach Tom Eller from the start of Aberdeen’s season.   https://www.cecildaily.com/spotlight/elkton-s-tom-eller-settling-in-as-ironbirds-hitting-coach/article_0a1e9c54-b65e-50bd-bab5-0dbadc9bfcdb.html
