Of the needs that encompass a rebuilding club, a ninth inning specialist is significantly low on the priority list. So is a middle infielder due to get another raise in arbitration that could push his salary above $5 million.

The Orioles tried but were unable today to reach agreement on trades involving Mychal Givens or Jonathan Villar.

Executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias is following the Andrew Cashner trade to the Red Sox on July 13 with a deadline deal involving a minor league player, according to a source.

The player hasn’t been informed and the club is withholding the announcment.

If he’s non-tendered, the financial ladder resets. No one is going to pay him 7 Mill. But someone will sign him for 2.5, maybe.

WRONG.    I heard the same type of prediction last year when Schoop was non-tendered.    Then he was signed for $7.5 mm plus incentives.

Per Fangraphs, Villar has been worth $11.6 mm in 2/3 of a season this year.    He was worth $16 mm last year.   Their valuation is not the gospel, but you are letting your own dislike of Villar’s style of play color your judgment if you think Villar will be paid $2.5 mm next year.

Agreed.  Also we learned he doesn't have a mandate to dump salary, and he's not going to make trades just to chase the #1 pick.  I think Detroit has that locked up.

Yep, good points.

You know just once before I kick, I would like to see the Orioles be the team that just does a huge, big, dramatic, unexpected multi team trade deal that just make you go “Man, how is that going to work out?”  We have perhaps had maybe the most conservative (i.e. boring) GMs and ownership in all of sports.   Keeping my fingers crossed for down the road.

Think Eric Bedard

I said Schoop would be non-tendered at the begining of 2018.  You argued with me and he was non-tendered.  I am not sure what you are arguing about.

Castellanos to the Cubs, per Rosenthal. Between this trade and the Greene trade, I am ready to concede the number one pick.

Even without these trades, that Tigers team is awful, awful. There is little doubt we are not getting the #1 pick next year, so now we'll have to watch the Marlins to see if we can stay #2.
