Olympic Baseball Travesty

WTF?

"...Starting in the 11th inning of a tie game -- as decreed last month by baseball's international governing body -- each half-inning will begin with runners on first and second base, and the manager of the batting team can start the 11th at any point in his lineup..."

Maybe no baseball at all in the Olympics would be better than that nonsense

I'm not really in favor of this rule, but I'm also not one to reflexively call anything new or different a travesty. There are organizations that play baseball outside of Major League Baseball, and they can tailor their rules to fit their circumstances.

If they'd allowed ties after nine to stand would that have been apocalyptic? Or just tragic?

Drungo-

I respect you as a baseball historian and rennaisance man...but come on!

The Olympic rule creates something that's kinda sorta baseball-ish, but it sure isn't baseball.

Free basreunners? In scoring position, no less!

Start the batting order wherever you want with no regard to what happended in previous innings?

I find it hard to believe that these rules were concocted by people who actually understand/appreciate the intricacies of the game.

If it ain't broke...

You've gotten your wish. Baseball has been voted out of the Olympics after the Beijing games.

Not quite apocalyptic, but pretty darn close. The beauty of baseball is that as a team you always control your fate.

Your playing against the other team, not a clock. The other team always has to finish the game and it isn't over until you make the last out. It's like always being able to take a game winning last shot in basketball. Now granted, sometimes you are tossing up a prayer from the other end line, but you still get a chance. Ending games in a tie, takes away the one thing that makes baseball fundementally different from all other sports.

As for the olympic rule change, they are basically giving teams penality kicks like soccer. You get to start with a runner in scoring position (Probably your leadoff guy) and your best hitters up, to me thats not baseball.

If they really feel like they need to make a change, my suggestion would be to use Michigan High School rules after the 11th inning (Hitters start with a 2-1 count).

Even though I do think the rule is a travesty, I must say that was the most eloquent post I think I've ever seen here.:clap3:

It is a travesty in the traditional sense, but I can easily see why they did it. Time. They have who knows how many hundreds (thousands?) of games to play and a limited time to play them all. It makes it more like a sudden death thing. I actually kind of like the rule.

I think it would be even more *place your own term* here if someone looked at that and said "Dang, let's try that in the MLB!" "What a great way to solve those LONnnnnggg extra inning games!"

I had a feeling baseball in the Olympics were on the final death throws anyway...the World Baseball Classic seemed to be baseballs "great middle finger" at the Olympics and the WBC might just prove to be the only world wide competition!

This is absolutely no different than the overtime in NCAA football. Something like football but not quite football.

It makes sense during a short tournament with rosters that can't change. You almost never have to worry about games going longer than 12 innings and stretching out your picthing staff. Since it s a short tournament, the stats for individuals really don't matter, so this is a pretty clever way of avoiding long games while still keeping things evenly competitive.

I like it. Sorta.

One or the other would be good. Both is a bit much. I'd rather go with 1 runner on 2nd so there isn't a double play from the start.

Baseball in the Olympics isn't good because we don't get to see the star players. And there's really no realistic way that can happen.

Has anybody ever had a post be 100% correct to the letter before?

(Oh, wait. He misspelled "pitching". Maybe next time. :laughlol:)

    • Hopefully when he signs with someone else.  Until then it's a risk.
    • I don't even want my mind to go there. I don't think I can endure another cheap ownership and be a fan. For now I'm going to keep the faith that they won't be. It could be Elias being too conservative AGAIN then lack of commitment from ownership if they aren't very active in FA again
    • I have to laugh how different baseball is from football. Here Elias is saying he is in the information gathering stage when FA has already started and then you have football where you had Rex Ryan at Bart Scott's front door at the stroke of midnight in the start of football FA years ago. Crazy how the 2 sports works.
    • Pinto seems to be Eflin’s guy with McCann not coming back. For a team with budget constraints, is it really worth it pay McCann more than the league min?  I say no.  Also, it would be harder to get rid of McCann mid season in the clubhouse when we believe Basallo is ready.
    • I find Elias's comments when asked about Coloumbe kind of troubling. Sounds like business as usual for the Orioles. Translation: don't expect much, we're cheapskates ... "I think any time you look at option decisions, you're looking at price point on a salary and you're looking at putting together a budget and a plan for the offseason that encompasses the entirety of your roster, and in particular the bullpen. And then, ultimately, it comes down to a fit and your talent evaluation, and the fit that you see going forward. We had hard decisions in both directions with these option decisions. Sometimes, you make a decision not to kick off your offseason with exercising an option, but you remain in position to stay in touch with a really good player, and Danny's somebody who has done a ton for us, been enormously successful the past couple of years and we really enjoyed having him, and he's somebody that we're going to want to continue talking to throughout the free agency, as long as that lasts. But I'm sure he's going to have a lot of good opportunities, and we'll see where it goes"
    • I would have  took Preston Smith for a 7th.  Damn like the Steelers really needed him. I'm just not feeling a SB at all. This defense just isn't going to get it done in a big game. Thanks DeCosta for taking another year off of Lamar"s chances. A 4th for Ojulari wouldn't had been a bad deal.
    • Ok but I think many Orioles fans and the Orioles themselves would want the less years and not care so much about the  yearly salary especially with pitchers.
