50,000,000th Fan Contest

I listen to the O's on the radio while I'm here at work, and they are constantly plugging the "O's 50 millionth fan contest" where you will win 50K in cash, 4 season tickets for five years, and other prizes.

For more info, look here: http://www.wbaltv.com/news/16718430/detail.html

I did a little research, at the link below, I found that the attendance figures through the completion of the 2007 season was 48,536,072. Add in this years figure, through August 8th, and the total is 49,894,263. That leaves the promotion roughly 105,700 fans short of their goal.

Through August 8th, the average attendance figure is 25,626 per game, which means, only about 4 games to go until it gets really close. I haven't found any attendance figures from tonights (Aug 9th) game, but I will continually update this thread as we get closer.

The real monkey wrench here is that, after tomorrow's game against Texas, the attendance should be about 54K short; but the next series is against the Red Sox. So the game where this is most likely to happen is the August 19th game on a Tuesday vs the Sox.

I'd much prefer someone from the Hangout wins this, or at the very least an O's fan.

Attendance for tonight (Aug. 9) is 30,914.

Thanks.

That brings the total to 49,925,177. Just under 75K short. Previous attendance figures in May for a Tuesday/Wednesday 2 game series versus the Red Sox was just under 30K for both games. So, if the O's get between 25-30K tomorrow, that will definitely make the Tuesday game the penultimate game in this contest...unless the stadium sells out completely on the Monday, August 18th game.

Could there be anything more terrible than a Red Sox fan winning season tickets to the O's for 5 years and $50,000? The odds of that happening are pretty good, considering they outnumber O's fans. My parents are coming up from Richmond to see the game Tuesday vs. Boston, and if they show some guy in an Ortiz jersey on the big screen winning the prize, I'm going to cry.

Yes, a Yankee fan winning, which could happen if for some strange reason they don't reach the mark during the Sox series. The Yanks are next in line Friday night.

If I'd have to guess, the 50 Millionth fan will be someone during the Red Sox series. But, there is absolutely no way they will give the prizes to a Sox fan.

Just look at who's sponsoring it. The Maryland Lottery. If they gave out the winnings to a Red Sox fan or anyone that is not an Orioles fan, I would be shocked. They'll rig it, somehow, some way.

We were talking at the game about that last night. It will be disgusting to see a Red Sox fan walk away with 50 K and season tickets for 5 years. I can see ESPN having fun with that one now. If you are an Oriole fan buy tickets for that series and minimize the possibility as much as possible.

I would imagine it would be done at the turnstile. Kind of hard to rig that. I hope you are right but doubt it. If a Red Sox fan wins, I hope they pay him in pennies.

The contest is not Red Sox/Yankees/Any other team not named Orioles 50 millionth contest.

They'll find a way to rig the thing so, you know, a hometown fan of the Orioles wins the thing. I'm going to that game on the 19th, hopefully it's me!:clap3:

I'm sure they'll be by the turnstiles at the Eutaw St. entrance and pick some O's fan entering around the time that the "50 millionth" fan would be entering the ballpark. Remember there are people entering from a number of turnstiles all around the park, and you can't exactly keep a real-time count.

McNulty -- your numbers disagree with what was up on the scoreboard last night. Last night they posted the attendance and put up 49,929,xxx (I can't remember the exact number). So it was just over 70K short, not near 75K.

I don't know what the source of the discrepancy is, but I have to assume that they are going by the numbers they are posting on the scoreboard during games.

My source for the numbers is baseballreference.com. I have 49.927,158 for OPACY and 99,776,947 total.

FWIW, Orioles.com lists different totals. Specifically, they have 49,929,383 and 99,774,971 The differences may seem small, but they may not be to the fan chosen for the prize.

Right, that 49,929,383 was what was posted on the scoreboard last night. And is undoubtedly the basis for the contest.

I think it would be funny if today and the first Boston game saw 70,616 fans come through the turnstiles. Then it would be the FIRST FAN the next day that would win. People would be camping out overnight to get that first spot in line.

Or if today and the Boston game had 70,615 fans. Then it would be the SECOND FAN the next day. Camp out all night, and then the turnstiles open, and everyone is going "You first." "Thanks, but no, you can go first".
