Matt Wotherspoon and Josh Lucas were both released from Norfolk today.

Wotherspoon hit the jackpot this year when he got into some major league games, because when you look up AAA reliever comps in the scouting handbook, his picture is there. He will always get to say he's a former major leaguer.

Is there a reason they released them before the season ended? Only about two weeks or so left in the season. They made it this far ,would another few  weeks make a difference?

Could be for several reasons so its hard to say. This is the dog days of summer and if guys know they are not going back to the big leagues and will be free agents anyways this off season, some basically pack it in. Both are at the end of their careers most likely. They may just have other career opportunities presented to them.

The Tides have 15 active pitchers on their roster AFTER they were both released. It may have just been to clear up some space on the bus/pen/bench.

He just signed a Minor League deal with the Tigers.
