Catching

Roch did not even mention Perez.  And didn't talk about how he helped the pitchers at Bowie.   I think that is a oversight when talking about the catching in the O's upper minors.

I don't think anyone mentioned in the article other than Rutchman is of value to this team. I suspect they will attempt to squeeze value from Severino and Sisco. The rest of those guys are just SO replaceable. MiLB catchers are not to blame for pitching successes.

That's OK, you are often incorrect.  ?

And you have been wrong a time or two too.

MLB has this to say

Primarily, they are responsible for catching all pitches thrown by their teams' pitchers, often suggesting pitch selection by way of pre-pitch hand signals displayed between their legs and out of sight from the opposing team.

Yes, "often suggesting".  If I suggest you do something and you go and do it, am I the boss or are you the boss?

I have to laugh, and remember the scene out of "Major Leagues" when Charlie Sheen shakes off the catcher's call, and the catcher told the batter, what to expect.

Teaching his pitcher a lesson in whose' the boss. :) :) :)

My brother in law caught Brooks Robinson when he pitched against me. He told me what was coming.

Wasn't that Bull Durham?

Or did multiple acts of fiction have scenes of that nature?

A lot of pitchers let the Catchers call the game, but that is on them.  Ultimately the results of a pitcher's performance matter a lot more to them than it does the catcher.

You know, that is a fun take. But the game has changed so, I am not sure that a catcher has any real input now. It is the pitcher calling his shots or the guy with the ipad telling the catcher what to have him throw. Unless the guy is Verlander, the coach comes and gets him if he does not throw it.  The game, it's a changing.

Good point, I will concede that you and CoC are more correct than I am.

The boss is the pitcher.  He has to make the pitch, he's the one that that is most impacted by the results.

With young pitchers that the O's will hopefully use next season, you generally want the pitchers to be able to rely on the catchers.

Heck, even a guy like Scherzer was still working in partnership with Suzuki in their most recent playoff game.  It's not just the call of what pitch, it's the location of that pitch.  Yes, the pitcher is ultimately the boss, but the catcher's a part of the decision-making process.
