Aug 18th O's vs. Sox

He was out running on the field earlier and is expected to hit off a tee in the next couple of days and then progress from there. They are getting him a protective piece for his ankle, but he's feeling good.

He's so anxious to get back that apparently he keeps calling Richie Bancells trying to get him to give the team the okay.

It's good that it doesn't appear as if the O's will put him in unless he really is okay. But I can't wait to see him play again, he is really fun to watch.

Thanks. Wow, just heard the Sux announcers say that no pitcher's been able to get Mora out three ABs in a row since the ASB! I wonder if that was just hyperbole or actually true.

You must not have ever complained about Trembley, or any member of the team not performing well then.

That's probably true to an extent. I don't know nearly as much as a lot of people on here so I avoid a lot of the armchair GM pissing matches in order to not look like a complete idiot. :D

I know he got "suspended" by Tony for arguing with the usual crowd in the thread regarding Matusz' press release directed to Baltimore fans. I would imagine he'd be back by now, though. Maybe he left. I thought he caught sort of a bad break with it.

Sorry I missed that one. What was controversial abt Matusz's press release??

It was in this thread.

This was the post that started it:

Dear Matusz Family,

On behalf of Oriole fans everywhere, I would like to apologize for about half of what you read around here.

Please understand that we're mostly just dorks with computers.

Thank you.

ps: I hope Your Boy gets signed and into the system Real Soon Now. God knows we need him. If he's as good as people say he is, he could be starting for the Orioles before you know it. In fact, the timing of the team-in-general means that it could work out with him becoming a famous "Boy Wonder Goes To The Playoffs" story. However, I understand about the whole agent-thing, so no hard feelings about that. (Personally, I think it's penny-wise and pound-foolish for him to delay, but what do I know? I'm just a dork with a computer.)

And then preceded to continue arguments, and made a political reference when someone asked about Frobby's whereabouts. Just typical RShack being condescending.

Lester is really tough tonight. Guthrie isn't quite as sharp but he's kept us in the game. Hopefully we can break through next inning for him, because the 7th should be his last.

I don't remember Lester's FB being this good in the past. He's been throwing in hard with excellent command. If he can continue to do that, he'll easily develop into a very good, top of the rotation starter (good chance at becoming an ACE) and a menace to the O's in the future.

I hadn't heard about that. Here's what he said:

Last I heard, he was in the Middle East, where we probably need a goodwill ambassador more than we do around here...

I dunno, that's pretty funny if you ask me. I was in Israel at the time.

    • Reminds me of Miguel Gonzalez, who came out of nowhere to be a major contributor to some playoff runs.  I doubt he ends up as a rotation mainstay. But I was certain O'Hearn would turn into a pumpkin after a few weeks too and he still hasn't.
    • If it weren’t for the service time component I think Holliday would have a very long leash before being sent down. He’s still contributing positively on defense and AAA pitchers just were not challenging him anymore. The priority above all else should be what is best for his long term development, and he needs to struggle against MLB pitching for longer than this to get to a point where you feel it’s doing more harm than good. I do think there can be some merit to the idea that MLB time exposes some weakness, which then can be worked on in a lower-stress environment in AAA, but I don’t think that’s strictly necessary since he’d be working on the same things against MLB pitching. However, the Orioles are now in a tricky situation where if it becomes apparent that Holliday is not going to win ROY, they have a strong incentive to send him down for at least a short stint to get the extra year. How they navigate that without that being totally transparent is tough. They could definitely do it now and nobody would claim service time manipulation given his struggles, but I don’t think they want to yet for purely development purposes. If he’s still struggling with around 100 PAs that’s when I think they make the move.
    • Yea, definitely a concern. Hes a great story but really good pitchers don’t normally sit around in obscurity until their mid 30s.     It’s possible they found something in him but the realistic thing is that this is short lived but perhaps there is a role for him in the pen and he can have a late blooming career as a reliever.  Nothing wrong with that.
    • New Kids on the Block line-up — could be more fun than the singing group.
    • The main concern I have is the amount of hard contact and looking at statcast bears that out. 15th percentile in Avg Exit Velocity at 91 MPH and 7th percentile in Hard Hit % at 51.6%.
    • If he doesn't show anything, why would they bring hm back (especially to the rotation)?
    • I'm sort of bracing for what happened in ST, which was that he started super strong and kind of faded with each start. He was already down a mph or so on his fastball in this last one, but then again he had a much better changeup this time.  So we'll see.
