Astros Stealing Signs in 2017

Cora and Hinch declined to comment. Beltrán, in a text message, said the Astros did nothing wrong.

“We took a lot of pride studying pitchers in the computer – that is the only technology that I use and I understand,” Beltrán said. “It was fun seeing guys get to the ballpark to look for little details.

“(In) the game of baseball, guys for years have given location and if the catchers get lazy and the pitcher doesn’t cover the signs from second base, of course players are going to take advantage.

“I don’t call that cheating. I call that using the small details to take advantage. I think baseball is doing a great job adding new technology to make sure the game is even for both teams.”

My recollection is that Astroball discussed at some length how Beltran was very good at studying pitchers and picking up “tells” of what a pitcher was going to throw. I don’t have a problem with that.    If electronic sign stealing was going on, that’s something else entirely.

Reading the comments, Gausman is getting a lot of pushback.

It's Twitter, so pushback is the norm. I think in general, this looks really bad for the Astros. They're obviously very talented, but it discredits anything they accomplished to a lot of people, much like Brady/Belichick are forever labeled as cheaters.

Is there a written rule that Houston broke? It’s bush league, but did they break a rule?

I do not think there was one in 2017 but I believe now there is. And the general conciseness is they were doing it this year as well.  Either way there should be a harsh punishment.

Here is a game in which they were doing it against the Orioles. You could def. hear it in the 2nd inning

I heard a horn on two pitches to the first two hitters in the inning, but I can’t say whether or not that was anything other than a boisterous fan.

What struck me was how consistently awful Jim Hunter is. He doesn’t get any better over time, or with distance from original date.

He was stupefied to see an Astros fan and an Orioles fan walking together before the game. Really? MLB should really do something about boring announcers. Stealing signs? Meh....

I think people should calm their outrage until we know the extent of this behavior. It's very possible this is widespread and at the very least the Astros aren't the only team being accused of this. My instinct is this is more on the MLB for lack of specificity and enforcement of rules.

Exactly. I’m guessing it is widespread. MLB doesn’t really care and it’s only become an issue with discovery.

Brewers and Rangers have been mentioned

    • I doubt that.  Looks like tickets are going below face value unless you’re a birdland member.
    • Article from when we signed him last November said he was out of options. Wonder if povich makes the playoff roster or someone like him makes sense to option down.    im a bit surprised he didn’t get called up sooner too other than the lack of options to send him back down after. But if we were going to just call him up for one bulk relief outing then release him, we could’ve done it for more meaningful games.    he is only just reaching arbitration, so he’d have to stick on the roster next year unless they can pass him through waivers anyway, but you’d at least like to give him a spring training opportunity to make the bullpen.
    • If Cowser does not receive the Rookie of the year, the Orioles will not pick up any draft pick if he finishes 2nd or 3rd. The owners and players did not institute an international draft, which is where the international draft picks would have come into play for 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the Rookie of the Year.

    • Detroit is one of those teams that got hot at the right time. I think they have won 6 in a row and were 9-1 in their last 10. I checked yesterday I think, but getting hot at the right time is huge for the Tigers. I think Texas last season got hot at the right time and they were like a freaking buzz saw.    I picked Baltimore to be a wild card before the season started, but had them going farther in the playoffs. I hope these guys can get it done. 🕊️
    • With either team as the opponent, the key is going to be us.  At full strength, our lineup is just flat out better than either KC’s or DET’s. Not by a little. By a lot. Witt is unreal, and Perez, Greene, and Carpenter are all really good. But behind those guys, it’s a bunch of mostly light hitters that have had their hot streaks (with DET’s being mostly ongoing) that don’t really compare to the depth in our lineup. If our pitching mostly holds up, we’ll win as long as our hitters do what they can do. Both of those are giant question marks, obviously, and the season will hang on the answer our guys provide. But you really can’t ask for much more than an opportunity to go into a series saying we think we’re better on paper than them and we just need to perform — that certainly didn’t feel like the case last year, with the way the Rangers hit up and down the lineup all season.
