2020 Chicago White Sox

The White Sox certainly are having an interesting offseason:

- Re-signed Jose Abreu (3/$50 mm)

- Signed Yasmani Grandal (4/$73 mm)

- Signed Dallas Keuchel (3/$55.5 mm)

- Signed Edwin Encarnacion (1/$12 mm)

- Signed Gio Gonzalez (1/$5 mm with 2021 option)

- Re-signed James McCann (1/$5.4 mm)

- Gave long term deal to Luis Robert (6/$50 mm with two $20 mm options).

In addition to that group, they have budding star Yoan Moncada under control for four years, Eloy Jimenez signed last year to a six year deal (now five remaining) for $43 mm and two options ($16.5 and $18 mm), Tim Anderson signed for three more years plus two club options ($12.5 and $14 mm) and Lucas Giolito coming into his own with four years of control remaining.      It sure looks like the White Sox window is about to open and stay open for a nice stretch.

A nice Givens spot.

They had a high Machado bid (including Yonder Alonso soft sell) last offseason - I think there was a colorful report the GM was on a golf cart or something when Padres Machado broke, to the team's consternation.  I wonder if they're happy now about how it worked out.

They've succeeded with Eloy and Robert - Madrigal next.  If they don't get Madrigal done, that'll be a fun Kris Bryant-ish cat and mouse to watch in March and April.  They could browse the Dozier/Asdrubal/Wilmer 2B tier if they want a little more cover.

Before they got Encarnacion, I thought some Incaviglia-style quick to bigs for Andrew Vaughn may have been in play this summer.

The White Sox and Angels may be refuges that aren't too offensive to semi-cheer for while waiting out the last couple years of return to relevance.

- Re-signed Jose Abreu (3/$50 mm)  2.9 rWAR leads AL

- Signed Yasmani Grandal (4/$73 mm) 0.3 rWAR

- Signed Dallas Keuchel (3/$55.5 mm) 1.9 rWAR

- Signed Edwin Encarnacion (1/$12 mm) -0.4 rWAR

- Signed Gio Gonzalez (1/$5 mm with 2021 option) -0.1 rWAR

- Re-signed James McCann (1/$5.4 mm) 1.1 rWAR

- Gave long term deal to Luis Robert (6/$50 mm with two $20 mm options).    1.6 rWAR

In addition to that group, they have budding star Yoan Moncada under control for four years 0.6 rWAR, Eloy Jimenez signed last year to a six year deal (now five remaining) for $43 mm and two options ($16.5 and $18 mm) 0.9 rWAR, Tim Anderson signed for three more years plus two club options ($12.5 and $14 mm) 2.3 rWAR and Lucas Giolito coming into his own with four years of control remaining 0.7 rWAR.      It sure looks like the White Sox window is about to open and stay open for a nice stretch.

Obviously 2020 has gone great for the White Sox.    I’ve added some 2020 data in bold.  Keep in mind that the Sox have played 52 games.   Overall these moves have worked out well.

The team colors of the Athletics are great ....... I could have simply posted an article from the Chicago Tribune or the East Bay Times, but that wasn't what I was into.

    • Gray has a full no trade, and has expressed his desire to stay in St Louis. It's doubtful that he's going to be traded.   Edited to say that I see you mentioned the same thing in a later post.
    • The standard before was just Eduardo Rodriguez, Daniel Cabrera, Luis Matos, Sidney Ponson, and Schoop, for like 50 years. 🤣. Koby Perez is doing alright.  Also, I count Felix Bautista as an Oriole DSL signing. It doesn’t matter to me that he originally signed with another team and played a bit.
    • I'd feel a lot better about him if he had a strong 2nd half like Snell did, after suffering early from the weird late contract thing. Unfortunately, JM's halves were pretty similar.  That said, his 2024 does present as a pretty clear aberration when looking at his career. So it will be up to scouting and data analysis to determine if there's a bounceback in him. Seems like an expensive dice roll to me.
    • Yet another reason why baseball has to get rid of deferred contracts and have a salary cap. Ohtani’s contract was bad for everybody but the Dodgers and Ohtani. It’s bad for California, our country, and let’s be frank here: bad for the sport.
    • I know everyone from the Diamondbacks is doing their best not to distress their asset any further, but Passan's piece this morning digesting the GM Meetings is I think the first big-time reporter reporting he is on the block with ARZ paying some of his too high salary down. He is a Rohrschach as the 2024 was genuinely atrocious.    I'm inclined to give him a grace as overexertion in October 2023 plus the weird contract scenario was I think a bridge too far.    He was one of my favorites at the July 2023 deadline that became Flaherty, and I think it screams Elias target that he'll be on a 1-year term in 2025. Jordan Montgomery, left-handed starter: The Diamondbacks want to move him and will eat some of his $22.5 million salary to do so. He's near the top of the list of players likeliest to get dealt after a rough 2024, and he'll head to his new team with plenty to prove as another go-around at free agency beckons
    • Yes, great players are always helpful. They improve your margin for error.
    • Why would you say that after the year EBJ just had? He is my Mullins replacement.
