OK, really, who’s next man up?

Luke has departed, and God bless him. This site is full of regular posters who are intelligent and skilled in the art of stats, so who can step up and replace, at least in part, Luke?

Tony is a genius and no mistake.  The reason I hang out here(despite the odd bad apple) is because the people are intelligent and have things to offer. The best thing about this site, however, is two extremely intelligent and skilled individuals who bounce things off of each other, and each benefited from the other’s insight, Even when they disagreed.

I really hope someone in the crowd can offer some of what Luke took with him. I have no idea who could fit that bill, although I have some thoughts on the subject.

So here’s a hope that someone in the crowd will borrow a quote from Isaiah and say, “here I am, send me.”

I wish I knew the first thing about what to look for when scouting. It’s interesting to think how deep a persons knowledge about a sport can go:

Most people who follow baseball know about balls and strikes and outs. A certain percentage of those people don’t know about tagging up on fly balls. Some of those people don’t know about OPS. Some of those people don’t understand the infield fly rule. Some of those couldn’t identify a balk. Some of those people don’t know about ground rules. Some of those people don’t know about park factors. Some of those people don’t know what WAR is and even fewer know what goes into its calculation. What about RAA? TTTP? Spin rates? Arm slots? Launch angles? There are things that Luke was doing that were so far into the iceberg.

Its even worse in football I think.

Exactly. Everybody who likes baseball has a surface level understanding of the game and the statistics. We need someone else who has the skill time and interest to dig deep. Luke’s ability got him a real job, So it Is unlikely that anybody can replace him, but I sure hope someone can try

You just have to be patient.    The site has attracted a number of people over the years who have scouting instincts.   We still get occasional drive-by’s from Nick Faleris (screen name: Stotle) who went on to do some work for a team, Baseball Prospectus and now 2080 Baseball, for example.   He used to drop his knowledge here regularly before going on to those other things.     I still like getting vatech1994’s takes on pitchers when he’s in the mood.    Slade-OH hasn’t been around as much the last year or two, but he used to help Tony with the top 30 list and still posts occasionally.     I’m not sure anyone as prolific as Luke will come along any time soon, but I’m sure will still get good information in addition to the excellent insights that Tony provides (which are what brought me to this site in the first place).
