#50THANNIVERSARY

On this day in 1970 Dave McNally (8,1 IP) and Pete Richert (0.2 IP) combined to defeat the Kansas City Royals.  The Orioles won the game by a score of 3-1.

Brooks Robinson went 4 for 4 with 2 runs scored in the game to pace the Orioles offense.

Orioles pitching limited the Royals to 6 hit, 3 of which came off of the bat of 3B Bob Oliver.

That Royals lineup is pretty pathetic.  Except for Oliver who ended up with 99RBI in 1970, pretty much the rest were leftovers from the 1969 expansion.   I think the Orioles beat them regularly in 1969-70, about as dominating as the 2019 Yankees were against the Orioles.  No wonder the 1970 Royals lost 97 games and fired their manager in the middle of the season. .

I beg to differ! A fine rookie season for future star Amos Otis, Lou Piniella, and a power-hitting catcher, the inauspicious beginnings of Dick Drago's and Paul Splittorf's fine careers, and the foundation of a good bullpen in Ted Abernathy and Tom Burgmeier. Everyone was young, but the core was beginning, as shown by their second-place 85-76 record the very next year, right on the Pythagorean W/L nose.
