I agree with this.  We should be so lucky that he falls to 5.  Don't get cute!

Right, please don't go the under-slot route this time.  We'd have to go through another year of sarcastic witticisms from CoC - that's reason enough to just go best player available. j/k   I get why they did it last year, but it's too risky a strategy to use 2 years in a row, when you really can't afford to miss - and you have a stud there ready to pick.

Also, it seems like some of the benefit may be eroded at 5 vs. 2

5. Baltimore Orioles: Harry Ford, C, North Cobb (GA) High School

The current wisdom is that Baltimore will look to cut a deal here that saves them a substantial amount of money, probably a million or more, after they signed their first pick in 2019, Heston Kjerstad, for $2.5 million below slot. They’ve been linked to Brady House, but he has no reason to take that kind of haircut here, since he’s in every mix from here on down.

From Keith Law. Has us skipping Watson, House, Leiter and Jobe to pick Ford.

I know some of the luster has worn off Leiter and Rocker, but if either are available at 5, I want one of them, but I'm not optimistic, they've gone position player heavy early in the last two drafts. In the end, I'll be happy as long as they go with who they truly feel is best player on the board.

50/50 shot on that

To give a little more color on Law's first mock, he has Pittsburgh taking Davis 1-1 (the ACC Tournament started on Tuesday and Davis went 2-5 with 2 HR's in a win against Clemson, and 3-7 with a HR in yesterday's loss to Georgia Tech). Here's what he wrote on Leiter being selected by Arizona, one pick after us:

6. Arizona Diamondbacks: Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt

They’d love Lawlar, and I would say there’s a non-zero chance he gets here; if Texas takes Rocker or Leiter and Boston takes the other, that probably pushes Lawlar here, with Baltimore likely going under slot.

    • The O's made the playoffs.   The players  Elias acquired at the deadline helped make that happen.  Without those players and with all the injuries the O's probably do not make the playoffs.   Eflin has been a key starter.  Dominguez has saved 10 for 11.   Soto has an ERA under 2.00 in September.    Slater is a better version of McKenna  and has helped in the outfield. The O's still have 2 or more years to fix Rogers.   I agree Jimenez did not help but he didn't cost much either.
    • I think the hottest ever saw an O's team enter the playoffs was 1974. 28 of 34, 16 of their last 18, including 9 in row to close it out. Won game one of the playoffs, lost the next 3 including 30 straight innings scoreless. what happened yesterday does not gaurentee today
    • As I have said before,  someone on the O's thinks they can fix Rogers or they would not have traded for him.   He has lost a couple of miles on this fastball and that could be mechanics. Rogers has 2 options left so they can fix his in ST and the minors.  His service clock is stopped while he is in the minors.  He has two more years of major league service time left. It's a little premature to count Rogers as a bust.   Acquiring his is adding a lefthanded starter to the O's pitching depth.  He will turns 27 in November which is not old.  Heck, Suarez is 34 and added a lot to O's pitching staff this season.
    • You mean a AAAA starter.  Sometimes I think he thinks he’s smarter than everybody else, so he does things that no one else would do just to prove a point. I don’t actually think he wants to spend money on free agents. I think he likes the idea of trying to be the smartest man in the room. I think his attitude is going to change somewhat next off-season, After his many blunders at the trade deadline.
    • I don’t think this is true. He’s had a lot of games as you described and there haven’t been these ten post reactions to said games. He’s going to hit. Would it be nice if he was producing this year like the other rookie Jacksons? Of course but no one (that I’ve seen) on this board is rooting against him or suggesting that he won’t be a high caliber major league hitter. His defense is another thing but he’s going to figure it out at the plate at the MLB level. You’re right though - his nice game should have garnered more attention, especially with the way the year has largely gone for him. I’m not sure what role he has in the postseason other than maybe as a pinch runner. Right now I don’t think I’m putting him ahead of any of the lefty bats on the roster. I guess he’s the only other ‘SS’ they have on the big club so he’s surely going to fill a spot but I can’t think that he plays ahead of anyone, including Rivera right now. It will be interesting to see how Hyde and Co. deploy Holliday come Tuesday.
    • Per Roch, Selby is the call up today, with Davidson presumably DFA.   Guessing today’s pitching looks like:  - Suarez (2-3 IP)  - Webb (1 IP)  - Soto (1 IP)  - Dominguez (1 IP)  - Coulombe (1 IP)  - Selby (2 IP) Bowman fills in gaps as needed.
    • Holliday and Henderson is going to be an elite top 2 in the lineup.
