What can O's players show in 2020 that impacts the future?

Two months could change the impression of these O's players.

Hanser Alberto - Needs to show he can hit right handed pitching.  He has shown he can be an above average fielder at 2B.  And that he can hit lefties.  If he could put up a .350 OBP vs righties it could increase his value and improve his changes of a longer career in the MLB with the O's or other teams.

DJ Stewart.   He has a small window to show he can get on base at a high rate and to play an average left field.  With his bat control if he can hit for a .350 OBP, move runners in front of him and show some power he could prove to be a valuable player.   He has done that at AA and AAA.   Its time to show it in the majors.

Austin Hays.  Needs to show consistency of production and that is can stay healthy.  If he does that he can be an O's outfielder for a long time.

Chris Davis.  Show that the added weight makes him rebound to 80% of what he was.  He was a force in get lineup at one time.  He had a good ST 1.0.   He needs to show  he can do that for two months.

Renato Nunez.   10 homers and 30 RBI in two months.    That would be a year and a third at that pace.   It could make him valuable to some team this off season.  Especially if the DH possibly expanding to the NL next season.

Anthony Santander.   10 homers and 30 RBI in two months.  Plus a respectable OBP and fielding at the corners.   Many seem to overlook or downgrade Anthony.   He has shown power and a decent arm in the outfield.  His range in the corners in average.   If he can keep doing that and improve his OBP he could be a Orioles for the future.

Pedro Severino.  Needs to improve fielding, game calling and hitting just to stick around.  With Rutschman projected to be in the major in early 2022,  Severino this year and 2021 needs to show he deserves to stick around as a backup with some pop.

Rio Ruiz. Needs to show he can raise his OBP to .330.  Ruiz showed last year he can be a average fielding 3B with average range and fielding pct.  That could be good enough to stick around for awhile if      he can improve his OBP to .330 and show his adjustments in his 2nd half will continue to provide power.   He needs to find a way to hit lefties to not become a platoon players.    He gets the opportunity to improve because there is no one pressing him from the minors.

Jose Iglesias.  Maintain his career defense.   At 30, he can be the glue that holds the infield defense together.   Not a big offensive preformer.  Mentor Richie Martin.    That is his biggest way for him to impact the future.

Ryan Mountcastle.   Hit when given the chance and improve 1B defense.  I think he is a 1B/DH long term, whether he gets some at bats in left field or not.   Get a 7th year and then be ready to hit.

Yusniel Diaz.   Stay healthy and focus like he did in ST 1.0.   Not everyone is going to be healthy and perform well which could give Diaz a chance in 2020 in the majors.

John Means.  Repeat last year.

Alex Cobb.  Pitch well enough to be traded.

Hunter Harvey.  Find some control.

Mychal Givens.  Pitch well enough to be traded.

Richard Bleier.  Pitch well enough to be traded.

Cody Carrol.  Find some control.

Tanner Scott.  Find some control.

I know he's flirted with brittle, but I think even if he is in Fred Lynn mode, real CF defense is the key to Hays's path to 3000 PA's, because then even medium BAT development can pass.  If he's just another corner guy, then he might not be a favorite to outhit Kjerstad, Diaz, Mountcastle, etc. over the LF/RF medium term, never mind if Santander or Stewart pop like they might.

Also, SG, good to see you again!

It's an interesting point about Nunez. His trade value may jump a bit with more places to play, but I still don't see him as a trade chip to offer too much back outside of a lottery ticket.

For me, the biggest players to watch are:

Mychal Givens - I think he is the one that can do the most in the season to get traded. He has the stuff to intrigue teams already, if he can pitch well and be "on" for the first month and get dealt for a quality package at the end of August, that would be huge.

Austin Hays - I think he's the most interesting piece as he's the one with the most potential upside of those that are likely to get much playing time this year.

D.J. Stewart and Anthony Santander - If either one completely falters, they get bypassed by the likes of Mountcastle, Diaz, etc. and they likely lose any chance of being a contributor on this team beyond this year. A mediocre showing keeps them in the mix and a very good two months could elevate them to a spot where one of Mountcastle, Diaz, etc have to prove they can unseat them.

Chris Davis - I think a really bad two months makes him someone the front office may finally drop at the end of the year with youngster on the way. With Mancini out and the team likely reluctant to start Mountcastle's clock, Davis could get a lot of playing time. This could be it...unless ST part 1 wasn't a fluke.

Which means the sample size was not large enough to pick Kjerstad then, as he was picked for like 1/8th of a season.

Either they have enough data to make informed decisions or they don't.  I don't see how they can in one case and not in the other.

That doesn’t mean it has any meaning heading into 2021

Hey so, since you haven't been around in approximately 3,099 days, what are your general thoughts on the early days of the Elias era? Just curious where you stand on stuff, generally.

Alberto could improve his OBP in addition to other stuff mentioned. Power too. Otherwise he is a slightly more talented Danny Valencia/Geronimo Berroa.

Lol, Mountcastle could increase his value to the organization by not accruing service time.

Miguel Castro could be a sneaky trade candidate if he does well. His second half 2019 was quite good and more in line with his Orioles stats.

Sisco needs to hit or find a new position, otherwise he is done (if he isn't already).

Nunez - hit a LOT of home runs and get traded.

    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
