2009 Draft: #1 Stephen Strasburg

Recommended Posts

BTW, you are NOT an idiot sir. I corrected Crow per your reminder. :)

OK, well perhaps this time I'm not an idiot, but I did come back to this thread right after I posted just to check for typos and I saw you had already added him in. I thought for sure that there simply wasn't enough time for you to add in his name between my post and when I came back to re-read it.

I guess the Associate Editor hat comes with a setting for "ludicrous speed". :D

How does Grant Green compare to Gordon Beckham? Will Green end up being the better draft prospect?

It's a little early to know what we have in Green... but his junior campaign will be telling. Green has more upside than Beckham, and is being compared to Evan Longoria by coaches and scouts. He's a big SS at 6-3/180, but a good fielder with a strong arm, whose athleticism allows all who watch him play see him as a true 5-tool talent. While he runs well, he may not steal a great many bases, but he'll be an asset on the bases. There are concerns that as he fills out, that he'll lose a bit of speed, and need to switch to 3B, but that is a ways off regardless.

Gordon Beckham should be a good pro SS, hitting 20+ HR and showing average skills at SS defensively, albeit with a very strong arm... however, again, Green could be truly special. Time will tell, and this coming college season will be one to watch.

  • 2 weeks later...

i would be so happy if we got any of the top three prospects

strasburg beacuse he is by far the best avialable talent a strasburg, Matusz, Tillman would be a nasty top of the rotation to have for years

Green SS is our biggest need in the farm system and our ML roster if we want to compete in a couple years

Crow beacuse he is dominant

Crow beacuse he is dominant and it would be like a big "up yours" to the nationals and their fans

It's unlikely that we'd get Strasburg, but one can hope.

Welcome to the Hangout. :) But, please be sure to use proper Punctuation/Capitalization, etc... it's important to maintain the quality of the site, as well as being in the rules. ;)

Is anybody else noticing a slight cocking of the arm in Strasburg's delivery? Not unlike that in Crow's? With Crow, it was a huge red flag, that you can almost picture his ligaments snapping with every pitch he threw. With Strasburg, it's less pronounced, but I'm still noticing it. Does this worry anybody, or is it just being overlooked because he's so good?
