Did the M's reject Casas for Castillo, or reject Casas for one of their young, cost-controlled starters? MLBTR reports it's the latter, and I thought I'd read that Boston wouldn't offer Casas for Castillo straight up. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/12/mariners-receiving-more-trade-calls-on-luis-castillo.html If that is the case I think Mountcastle for Castillo makes plenty of sense. If Castillo insists on having the 4th year option picked up, maybe have the Mariners throw in some cash with the deal to offset it. 4 years at +/- $22m a year for 32-year old Castillo feels like the exact amount of duration/AAV Elias would have the tolerance for. -

No idea why people think that a guy who failed to return from TJ surgery, and then had a second surgery is ever going to contribute in a meaningful way for a team that is supposed to be building a championship roster? If we have to sign people like Means than we will never challenge for a WS.... but I guess that is right out of the Elias playbook. -
Again? LOL. He's 28 next year. Trending in the wrong direction? OPS+ the last 4 years: 114, 108, 117 113 France was better than Mountcastle at his peak, but France is actually an aging player trending in the wrong direction who was further along in arbitration w a higher salary. Again, your classification of Mountcastle doesn't correspond with observable reality. -
I think Elias has a longer time horizon than a 3-4 year window. I think his perennial contender. (Is it a business mantra or the Eastern language zen-type eternal focus? 🤔) -
Means at the right price would not be the worse thing in the world, but I'm guessing he will get healthy, rehab, show that he's ready, and then cash in with a team in need of starting pitching. The questions is when he'll be ready. -

Fair enough. Then explain to me what Mountcastle does or contributes that would be appealing to another team? Because all I'm seeing is below average power and poor OBP from an aging player who's trending in the wrong direction. I'd argue that Ty France (again, someone the Mariner's DFAed), at his peak, was a better player than Mountcastle because he posted some very solid OBP seasons. Why would the Mariner's want to trade for the Spider-Man meme of the player they DFAed last season? -
