#50THANNIVERSARY

On this day in 1970, the National League defeated the American League 5-4 in 12 innings in the 41st MLB All-Star game.  The game was play in Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium in front of  51,838 fans. The Cubs' Jim Hickman singled off of Clyde Wright to score Pete Rose for the win.

Earl Weaver managed the American League team and had the support of Baltimore Orioles starters Frank Robinson, Boog Powell, Davey Johnson and Jim Palmer, additionally, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Brooks Robinson were reserves.

Palmer started the game and finished with a line of 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB and 3 K.  He also went 0-1 as a batter.  Palmer struck out Hall of Fame players Willie Mays, Tony Perez and Johnny Bench, walked Rico Carty and allowed his lone hit to the Cubs' Don Kessinger.

Frank and Boog both went 0-3 in the game while Davey Johnson went 1 for 5 with a single off of Gaylord Perry.  Brooks went 2 for 3 with a single off of Gaylord Perry and a 2 RBI triple off of Bob Gibson after replacing Tommy Harper, who entered the game as a pinch runner, in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Cuellar and McNally did not get into the game.

Boston's Carl Yastrzemski (4 for 6, 1 2B, 1 R and 1 RBI) was named the game's MVP.
