Your counterexample is the BoSox acquiring Sprague for Tankersley?!?

Ed Sprague?

The thirdbaseman?

Back to the drawingboard for you. We're looking for non-closer relief pitchers with multiyear/multimillion deals here.

This is getting way back there, but wasn't Jose Cruz Jr (back when he was a superstud prospect) traded to Toronto for a couple of average relievers (one of which coincidentally was Mike Timlin).

October 22, 1998: Granted Free Agency.

November 16, 1998: Signed as a Free Agent with the Baltimore Orioles.

July 29, 2000: Traded by the Baltimore Orioles with cash to the St. Louis Cardinals for Chris Richard and Mark Nussbeck (minors).

July 29, 2002: Traded by the St. Louis Cardinals with Placido Polanco and Bud Smith to the Philadelphia Phillies for Scott Rolen, Doug Nickle, and cash.

October 28, 2002: Granted Free Agency.

January 6, 2003: Signed as a Free Agent with the Boston Red Sox.

October 28, 2003: Granted Free Agency.

November 17, 2003: Signed as a Free Agent with the Boston Red Sox.

Some other non-closer reliever deals:

Arthur Rhodes, age 35, traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Cleveland Indians for Matt Lawton in Dec 2004.

Arthur Rhodes, age 36, traded by the Cleveland Indians to the Philadelphia Phillies for Jason Michaels in Jan 2006.

Mike Myers (classic LOOGY), age 30, traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Colorado Rockies for Curt Leskanic in 1999.

Mike Myers, age 32, traded by the Colorado Rockies to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Jack Cust and J.D. Closser in 2002.

Mike Myers, age 36, traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Boston Red Sox for Carlos De La Cruz (minors) and Kevin Ool (minors) in 2006.

Ex Virginia Tech Hokie Mike Williams (who was a closer for PART of his career) traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Houston Astros for Tony McKnight on the 2001 trade deadline at age 32.

Mike Williams traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates with cash to the Philadelphia Phillies for Frank Brooks before the 2003 trade deadline at age 34.

Another Hokie, Brad Clontz, traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Robert Manzueta (minors) in Dec 99 at the age of 28.

Last year at the deadline, 39 year old lefty Rheal Cormier was Traded by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Cincinnati Reds for Justin Germano. Is that the same J.G. who is now pitching great for San Diego? Baseballreference.com claims it is, but it does not show the transaciton that subsequently got Germano from Philly to San Diego.

I don't know all these guys that came back in the deals, so I don't know if they WERE considered good prospects at the time of the deal or not. But, at least, here is some fodder for the discussion based on the last 10 years or so.
