The O's should go for it

I  think many fans look too much at history and not enough at what is happening on the field.  O's have  the #3 best  offense in the AL.   We have not seen the real Means and Harvey  yet.    Iglesias is the leader of the infield and the Spanish speaking players.  He is about to return.

It will be such a boost for the rebuild if things fall their way and they get hot at the right time.

Leader of the Spanish speaking players?

I really hate to be negative, and that is not what I am attempting right now, but I do suggest some realism. What is happening on the field is bad pitching, bad defense, really foolish base running, and good offense from guys who are not currently playing. Valaika and Mullins and Velasquez are not going to an offense.

There are a lot of encouraging things about this team, and it certainly seems to be better then last year’s group. But the starting pitching is really bad, and I mean Nelson Muntz saying, “ha-ha” bad.

I will be disappointed if we make no trades at all, because I think we have several guys who would be of real value to other teams.

But this remains a year of improvement, of journey rather than arrival.

I think Givens gets traded.

I am not saying this is a WS team.   But a  really good offense can help a team a lot.   A healthy Means, Cobb, Milone  and Eshelman can form a decent rotation.  The defense has good range and iglesias coming back is a big plus.

Even some of the best O's teams had no hit good defense players like Belanger and Dempsey.  So Mullins/Hays do not bother me.  The other guys you mentioned of bench players.  As long as they can hold their own in the field their offense is not a problem as reserves.

And, yes this is a year of improvement and its coming faster than expected.

Nope. I don’t get it.

It implies that the Latin players on the team are some sort of separate entity, separate from the rest of the team, that have a need to have a leader just for them.  Like they can't function properly within the rest of the team dynamic.  Also that they aren't individuals and it is also kinda rude to assume none of the non-Latin players could be bilingual.

I don't think it's likely that Severino (.981 OPS), Iglesias (.977 OPS), Sisco (1.037 OPS), and Santander (.961 OPS) will maintain this level of production.  Once those guys cool off our offense will hit a steep decline.

I hear what you’re saying, but the fact is they aren’t. Means is not healthy, the offense is not really good, at least the offense from the guys who are currently playing. Iglesias isn’t back yet. The bench players are not holding their own in the field.

You’re basically saying, “if this thing is true then things will be great as long as these other things are true as well.” And yes that’s true but that’s an awful long string of maybes.

At the moment we have to look at what is.

Some may cool off,  some may improve.   The O's just swapped out Smith for Mountcastle.   Hays probably hits better than he has so far.      There is improvement of individual hitters also.  Overall hitting is contagious.  Put a bunch  of guys together that can hit and they help each other.

How, with trash cans?

That’s Hyde not Elias....and even if he didn’t think that he’d still say it. His job is to motivate the players, keep them in the game, and keep morale good.

I'll go a bit further and say it's essentially a 100% lock that their combined OPS this year is going to be 100 points shy of where it is now.  Santander is the only one who is remotely likely to keep that up.

And a very good chance that next year it's going to be 200 points less.

    • more evidence that fWAR is the better metric, right? cowser isn't below replacement level defensively - so that # should be positive, right?
    • The O's made the playoffs.   The players  Elias acquired at the deadline helped make that happen.  Without those players and with all the injuries the O's probably do not make the playoffs.   Eflin has been a key starter.  Dominguez has saved 10 for 11.   Soto has an ERA under 2.00 in September.    Slater is a better version of McKenna  and has helped in the outfield. The O's still have 2 or more years to fix Rogers.   I agree Jimenez did not help but he didn't cost much either.
    • I think the hottest ever saw an O's team enter the playoffs was 1974. 28 of 34, 16 of their last 18, including 9 in row to close it out. Won game one of the playoffs, lost the next 3 including 30 straight innings scoreless. what happened yesterday does not gaurentee today
    • As I have said before,  someone on the O's thinks they can fix Rogers or they would not have traded for him.   He has lost a couple of miles on this fastball and that could be mechanics. Rogers has 2 options left so they can fix his in ST and the minors.  His service clock is stopped while he is in the minors.  He has two more years of major league service time left. It's a little premature to count Rogers as a bust.   Acquiring his is adding a lefthanded starter to the O's pitching depth.  He will turns 27 in November which is not old.  Heck, Suarez is 34 and added a lot to O's pitching staff this season.
    • You mean a AAAA starter.  Sometimes I think he thinks he’s smarter than everybody else, so he does things that no one else would do just to prove a point. I don’t actually think he wants to spend money on free agents. I think he likes the idea of trying to be the smartest man in the room. I think his attitude is going to change somewhat next off-season, After his many blunders at the trade deadline.
    • I don’t think this is true. He’s had a lot of games as you described and there haven’t been these ten post reactions to said games. He’s going to hit. Would it be nice if he was producing this year like the other rookie Jacksons? Of course but no one (that I’ve seen) on this board is rooting against him or suggesting that he won’t be a high caliber major league hitter. His defense is another thing but he’s going to figure it out at the plate at the MLB level. You’re right though - his nice game should have garnered more attention, especially with the way the year has largely gone for him. I’m not sure what role he has in the postseason other than maybe as a pinch runner. Right now I don’t think I’m putting him ahead of any of the lefty bats on the roster. I guess he’s the only other ‘SS’ they have on the big club so he’s surely going to fill a spot but I can’t think that he plays ahead of anyone, including Rivera right now. It will be interesting to see how Hyde and Co. deploy Holliday come Tuesday.
    • Per Roch, Selby is the call up today, with Davidson presumably DFA.   Guessing today’s pitching looks like:  - Suarez (2-3 IP)  - Webb (1 IP)  - Soto (1 IP)  - Dominguez (1 IP)  - Coulombe (1 IP)  - Selby (2 IP) Bowman fills in gaps as needed.
