The Rangers radio guys said he was one of only four players to hit the center field bleachers at the old polo grounds with a 475-footer: Brock, Aaron, Adcock and a guy who did it as a member of the negro leagues, but I didn’t catch his name.

I remember when Brock broke the single-season stolen base record, in 1974.

I also remember when he came back for one final season in 1979, at the age of 40 ........ and batted 304. ))) :skeletor:

In 1967, a very young-looking Tom Seaver made the National League All-Star team.

Lou Brock, not knowing who Seaver was, assumed that he was a bat boy.

Subsequently, the following conversation took place in the locker room the day before the game ........

BROCK: lllll "Hey kid, get me a Coke."

SEAVER: llll "Get your own f***ing Coke. I'm a player."

The first baseball season I ever followed in its entirety was 1967 when the Cardinals won the Series.   Brock was so dominant in that Series, and again in 1968.

1967: .414/.452/.655, 8 runs, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 7 stolen bases

1968: .464/.516/.857, 6 runs, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 7 stolen bases.

This in an era when runs were really hard to come by.   The Cards scored 25 runs and posted a .628 composure OPS in winning a 7-game series in ‘67, and 34 runs and a .718 OPS in losing a 7-gamer in ‘68.

Lou Brock spoke at a baseball camp I attended when I was around 11 or 12 (probably around 1999, give or take a year) in the next town over in rural Iowa. He took a limo to the camp. That was the first time this small-town kid had ever seen a limo in person. I had his career stats memorized from the baseball cards I had of him, but that long black limo made him an instant legend in my mind.  I won an award at that camp (fastest pitch, I believe) and got to meet him. He was the nicest, most down-to-earth guy.  We lost a great one.
