Yacabonis gets another year:

Mariners re-signed RHP Jimmy Yacabonis to a minor league contract.

Yacabonis made two appearances for Seattle this past summer before getting outrighted off the 40-man roster and electing to become a free agent. He'll return as organization relief depth heading into 2021.

Jake gonna have some competition soon!

Delmon Young hurled a scoreless inning Saturday for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League.

Yes, you’re reading this correctly. The 35-year-old former major-league outfielder has made the transition to pitching in Australia and finally made his first appearance on the mound. He issued a pair of walks, but managed to induce an inning-ending twin-killing to keep the Brisbane Bandits off the scoreboard in the ninth inning. He last appeared in the major leagues with the Orioles back in 2015.

Good idea for Young to be in Australia.  Probably pretty small Jewish and Hispanic populations.

I know he is one of your favorite people.   If not for that double, we may well have completely forgotten him by now.

O'day is a Yankee!

Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports that the Yankees are in agreement on a deal with free agent reliever Darren O'Day.

It's a one-year, $2.45 million contract with a dual option for 2022, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. O'Day posted a sharp 1.10 ERA, 0.796 WHIP, and 22/5 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 regular-season innings (19 appearances) last year with the Braves, but they ultimately opted to decline his $3.5 million club option for 2021. The 38-year-old righty should be able to grab a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day bullpen this spring.

Kills me to see O’Day and Britton in the Yankee ‘pen.   But I’m glad O’Day bounced back nicely last season.

And Brach across town in Queens.   Mychal in Denver.   That was a heck of a foursome for a while.

Schoop back with the Tigers:

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Tigers have re-signed Jonathan Schoop to a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

Schoop had a nice 2020 season in Detroit, putting together a .278/.324/.475 batting line with eight home runs over 44 games. He also offers solid defense and is just 29, so that the Tigers were able to re-up with him on a modest one-year pact looks like a good get for the team. Schoop should hit in the first half of the batting order again in 2021.

    • That would be pretty cool. Just do me a favor and please don't start the magic number thread in June next season.
    • There’s another accomplishment from 1983 I’d like to match.
    • I'm more of a Prime Number guy, I'm happy enough with 89. Round numbers are for suckers.   Pretty disheartening they haven't managed to reach that relatively meager goal in 40 years.
    • Still with a chance to do this for the first time since 1982-83. Would be one more nice accomplishment for this organization.
    • The weird thing about our bullpen is that they rarely blow leads.   They have a 69% save rate, 4th highest in baseball.  They make it scary, but generally, when they have the lead, they get the job done.   Where they are really bad is keeping games close when we’re down a run or two, last night being a classic example of that.   This year’s team has 32 comeback wins, compared to 48 last year.   Why is that?   Part of it is obviously on the offense, but part of it is that the bullpen doesn’t keep us in striking distance when we’re behind.   One way you can tell this is by the W/L records of the starters and the bullpen.  Last year, the starters were 57-40, this year they’re 60-49.   The starter got the decision 12 more times this year than last year, including 9 more losses (with 3 games to play).   That tells you that when the team is losing when the starter is pulled, they keep losing.  Meanwhile, the relievers were 44-21 last year, 28-22 now. They’re not picking up wins because they don’t give the offense a chance to catch up and get the win for the bullpen guy.
    • I do not disagree with above posts.  Also I am pretty sure that this time last season, the Texas Rangers Hangout was saying the exact same things as the Rangers Pen.  Point being, you never know until you know.  The pen is shaky, but is capable of putting together a solid run from time to time.
