He played very well for Manny when Manny hurt his knee and in the playoffs.  in 2014, Sept.Oct, he had an OPS of .804

While he wasn't Manny at 3rd, he was still above average with the glove.

Hard to compare any SS to the Blade, which some say was the best glove at SS in the business, ever.

Missing my point a bit, which is that Ryan was fine when he was able to serve strictly as a backup utility infielder.  He has no business playing more time than that as his bat sucks and pretty much always has (worse career average than Belanger, for example)  But Belanger COULD and DID play full-time even with his terrible bat because his defense was so much better- when Ryan has played full-time it is because somebody else was hurt, not because his glove or bat deserved a full time role.

Water under the bridge for me as I really could care less at this point about Ryan Flaherty's future career path because there is no way I believe he is any kind of fit for our rebuilding project, imho.  Although, of course,  he was always a favorite nugget of Buck's and Brady too so, who knows, the current Orioles management certainly could make Flaherty a deal and bring him back on board this offseason.

The Senators had a great glove at SS and no bat, which was pretty typical in those low ERA pitcher eras.

As great as the Blade was, I sometimes, think he would not be an everyday player on contending teams.

Until Cal came along, a lot of SSs on good teams were defense and no hit..Dal Maxvill withCards, Ray Oyler with Tigers, Bud Harrelson with the Mets, Eddie Brinkman was in that mold...

Chaz Roe with the breaking ball for the backwards K!

That almost looked like a Bugs Bunny cartoon piece of fiction.

It was very deliberate, very slow, and had an incredibly large break.

Maybe we should be investing more in player development? Scouts?:) Just a thought.

Ben McDonald said today the drastic improvement in his breaking pitch was a big part of the success.

I know we didn’t need more evidence that our org was incompetent with starting pitching but this one hurts. Just like Jake.

If his breaking ball is really clicking, that’s certainly a qualitative improvement it would seem. More time is needed, but he looks to be yet another example of our ineptitude at pitcher development.

Let's see what happens his 2nd time around the league once team's get a "book" on him.  I expect some improvement with him facing the pitcher now and not having to face the NY and BOS lineups.  Maybe a 1/2 run per game.  But if those numbers keep up long term, then I'll be right there with you.

He has similar succces for short stints before he has also face basically minor league offenses in all 5 starts.  Lot easier to pitch in games against the Marlins Mets Pirates thrn Yanks Red Sox and American League teams.

You missed the key thing: they adjusted something to improve his breaking pitch. He’s been successful with it. That isn’t just weaker competition, that is a material change.

    • The Orioles have a single regular reliever with an ERA under 3, and that's Coulombe and he's only been back less than a week. Last year they had 4: Bautista, Cano, and Coulombe. Name 2023 ERA 2024 ERA DIFF Yennier Cano 2.11 3.2 1.09 Cionel Perez 3.54 4.61 1.07 Danny Coulombe 2.81 2.2 -0.61 Jacob Webb 3.27 3.15 -0.12 Bryan Baker 3.6 5.01 1.41 Those are some pretty big dropoffs for Cano, Perez. And while Baker isn't a regular, he's certainly been abysmal aside from like a 3-4 week stretch. But it's not just a regression for Cano and Perez, but we also need to look at the guys masquerading/masqueraded as a closer this year in Kimbrel and Seranthony. Kimbrel had a 5.33 ERA, Seranthony with a 3.43. Between the 2 of them, that's nearly 3x worse performance than Bautista. Bowman has been serviceable, but imploded recently. Soto has been awesome for a spell, but he's had periods where things looked really off. The bullpen is absolutely the Achilles heel of this club. Their collective ERA is 4.26 this season. The Royals had the worst in the AL bullpens up until the O's imploded yet again last night. The Royals bullpen ERA is 4.21, btw. It is a major concern going into the playoffs.
    • I thought about Rivera,  but I figured his ability to play two positions would keep him around.    It will be interesting to see what they decide.     One of the non-pitchers will need to be left off as I understand it.     13 max
    • Freddie Freeman on crutches after the game last night.
    • I think there's room to keep both.   Shed some bad bullpen arms like Baker and Bowman.   Either Rivera or Gregory Soto can go.   So even if you add McDermott you can keep both Slater and Kjerstad.
    • Good information.  I would agree for sure if it was a one game series.  Assuming the series goes 3 games, would you keep Slater over Kjerstad?     I guess if we are prioritizing RH bats, then I’d drop Holliday.
    • Look at who you replying to, it's his thing.   Means nothing, adds absolutely nothing to the discussion.   Put him on your ignore list.   2-1 so far They made the playoffs They won that night and clinched a playoff spot
    • Understood. My comment was 100% above vibes. They went 2-4 over their last six and lost 3 of 4 to Seattle to drop out of the division and into the wildcard spot. It wasn't a months long limp like the Orioles, but that--at least in my book--counts as limping in. They had no apparent "momentum" going in, but still turned it around. That was the point.
