What happened to Andruw Jones

Remember The Alomar

Recommended Posts

Someone brought up in another thread how some players are just cruising along and then suddenly hit a wall and fall off the board, this of course made me think of Andruw Jones.

I have no idea what happened to the guy, how can you hit 41 home runs two years ago but this year he struck out 76 times in 209 at bats and had an OPS+ of 32? Roids?

Can anyone think of a falloff as steep as this?

He got lazy and out of shape.

He needs to rededicate himself and get healthy.

Personally, i think he has the potential to be a good buy low target for some team.

Next year may be his last chance and he probably knows it.

When I say his last chance, i mean to be a real player again and get a big contract.

Plenty of players have gotten fat and could still make contact, I think there's more to it then that.

But when you start to take things for granted, stop caring, stop trying, etc...it screw you up.

I mean, it is possible he is really older than he is or that he was on roids but I think this is more of a case of a player simply being stupid and taking his job for granted.

That is very true, but if you look at the guys stats it seems like he's gone blind or something.

Look his 2008 line: .158/.256/.249

That's a joke, a random AAA journeymen could hit better then that. If his stat's declinded over 3-4 years I'd say yeah your right but he's gone from an MVP candidate, to a guy having an off year, to one of the worst hitters in baseball in the span of three years.

There's more to this then Twinkies.

I agree, some team will take a flyer on him, but only if he gets healthy and in shape.

He will need to have 2 good years to get a big contract, and even then, he will be 33.

Well, he was hurt this year too...We have no idea if he had injuries that were bothering him much more this year or something like that.

Yeah I was just reading his wikipedia that he was put on the DL...I just assumed he got so few at bats because Torre had banished him to PONY league baseball or something.

I did a little research and got some similar career arcs, Maris was done in his early 30s and Darryl Strawberry was pretty much toast at 29.
